Summary

ThisRecommendationdescribestheForwardErrorCorrection(FEC)functionsthathavehighercorrectionabilitythanRS(255,239)codedefinedinITU-TRec.G.975forthehighbit-rateDWDMsubmarinecablesystems.InAppendixI,superFECschemes,whichhavehigher-correctionabilitythanRS(255,239)code,arealsodescribed.TheuseofthissuperFECfunctioninsubmarineterminaltransmissionequipments(TTEs)shouldnotbeconsideredasmandatory.

FOREWORD

TheInternationalTelecommunicationUnion(ITU)istheUnitedNationsspecializedagencyinthefieldoftelecommunications.TheITUTelecommunicationStandardizationSector(ITU-T)isapermanentorganofITU.ITU-Tisresponsibleforstudyingtechnical,operatingandtariffquestionsandissuingRecommendationsonthemwithaviewtostandardizingtelecommunicationsonaworldwidebasis.

TheWorldTelecommunicationStandardizationAssembly(WTSA),whichmeetseveryfouryears,establishesthetopicsforstudybytheITUTstudygroupswhich,inturn,produceRecommendationsonthesetopics.

TheapprovalofITU-TRecommendationsiscoveredbytheprocedurelaiddowninWTSAResolution 1.

InsomeareasofinformationtechnologywhichfallwithinITU-T'spurview,thenecessarystandardsarepreparedonacollaborativebasiswithISOandIEC.

InthisRecommendation,theexpression"Administration"isusedforconcisenesstoindicatebothatelecommunicationadministrationandarecognizedoperatingagency.

CompliancewiththisRecommendationisvoluntary.However,theRecommendationmaycontaincertainmandatoryprovisions(toensuree.g.interoperabilityorapplicability)andcompliancewiththeRecommendationisachievedwhenallofthesemandatoryprovisionsaremet.Thewords"shall"orsomeotherobligatorylanguagesuchas"must"andthenegativeequivalentsareusedtoexpressrequirements.TheuseofsuchwordsdoesnotsuggestthatcompliancewiththeRecommendationisrequiredofanyparty.

1Scope

ThisRecommendationdescribestheForwardErrorCorrection(FEC)functionsthathavehighercorrectionabilitythanRS(255,239)codedefinedinITU-TRec.G.975intheopticalfibresubmarinecablesystems.ThisRecommendationalsodescribesthesystemrequirementconcerningsupervisionforthesubmarinecablesystems.TheapplicationsbeingaddressedinthisRecommendationarebothopticallyamplifiedrepeateredsystems(ITU-TRec.G.977)andrepeaterlessopticalsystems(ITU-TRec.G.973).TheuseofthisFECfunctioninsubmarineterminaltransmissionequipments(TTEs)shouldnotbeconsideredasmandatory.

ItisnottheintentionofthisRecommendationtopursuethetransversecompatibilityofthesystem.Therefore,theselectionoftheFECframestructuresdescribedinthisRecommendationisamatterofjointengineering.

ThetransmissionsignalunderconsiderationcouldbeSTM-16,STM-64,STM-256,ODU1,ODU2,andODU3,becausesubmarinesystemscouldbeconsideredasoneoftheIaDIapplicationsdefinedinITU-TRec.G.872.Thisdoesnotmeanthatthebitrateisrestrictedwithintheabove-mentionedsignals.
