一年的故事

  ItwasinthelatterpartofJanuary,andaheavysnowfallwasdrivingdown.Itwhirledthroughthestreetsandthelanes,andtheoutsidesofthewindowpanesseemedplasteredwithsnow.Itfelldowninmassesfromtheroofsofthehouses.Asuddenpanicseizedthepeople.Theyran,theyflew,andtheyfellintoeachother'sarmsandfeltthatatleastforthatlittlemomenttheyhadafoothold.Thecoachesandhorsesseemedcoveredwithsugarfrosting,andthefootmenstoodwiththeirbackstothecarriages,toprotecttheirfacesfromthewind.

  Thepedestrianskeptintheshelterofthecarriages,whichcouldmoveonlyslowlythroughthedeepsnow.Whenthestormatlastceased,andanarrowpathhadbeenclearednearthehouses,thepeopleastheymetwouldstandstillinthispath,forneitherwantedtotakethefirststepintothedeepsnowtolettheotherpass.Sotheywouldstandmotionless,untilbysilentconsenteachwouldsacrificeonelegand,steppingaside,buryitinthesnowdrift.

  Byeveningithadgrowncalm.Theskylookedasifithadbeensweptandhadbecomeveryloftyandtransparent.Thestarsseemedquitenew,andsomeofthemwerewonderfullyblueandbright.Itwasfreezingsohardthatthesnowcreaked,andtheuppercrustofitwasstrongenoughbymorningtosupportthesparrows.Theselittlebirdswerehoppingupanddownwherethepathshadbeencleared,buttheyfoundverylittletoeatandwereshiveringwithcold.

  "Peep,"saidonetoanother."Theycallthisthenewyear,butit'smuchworsethantheoldone!

Wemightjustaswellhavekepttheotheryear.I'mcompletelydissatisfied,andIhavearighttobe,too!

  "Yes,"agreedalittleshiveringsparrow."Thepeopleranaboutfiringoffshotstocelebratethenewyear.Andtheybangedpansandpotsagainstthedoors,andwerequitenoisywithjoybecausetheoldyearwasover.Iwasgladtoo,becauseIthoughtthatmeantwewouldhavewarmdays,butnothinglikethathashappenedyet.Everythinghasfrozenmuchharderthanbefore!

  "Ofcourse,thepeoplejustdidittohavethefunofwatchingus;otherwisetheysurelywouldn'thavedoneit;andtopleasethemselvesfurthertheyputoutcrumbsofbread.Thatgivesusfood,andthusweareprovidedfor.SoIthinkmyhusbandandIwillstayhere-thoughwe'reverydissatisfied,mindyou.Yes,Iguesswe'llstay."

  "Butwe'llflyoutintothecountry,toseeifspringisn'tcoming,"criedtheothers.

  Andawaytheyflew.
