1853,forinformationonthismatter.Inthe1840s,Mauryhadbeenresponsiblefor

encouragingvoyagesduringwhichsoundings(测声)weretakentoinvestigatethedepths

oftheNorthAtlanticandPacificOceans.Later,someofhisfindingsarousedmuch

popularinterestinhisbookThePhysicalGeographyoftheSea.
