ThispassageisselectedfromAct3,Scene1inHamlet,atragedywrittenbyWilliamShakespeare.Thisfamoussoliloquypresentsanimageofaweak,meditativeandmelancholicHamlet.InthepreviousAct,Hamlethadlearnedaboutthecrimeofhisunclefromtheghost.However,duetohissuspicionoftheghostandhisloveforhismother,hedecidedtoperformaplaytocheckwhetherhisunclewasarealmurderer.

AfterHamletlearnsaboutthetruthofhisfather’sdeath,hehasbeentormentedbyhisfather’sdeathandhismother’shastymarriage,buthedoesn’tknowhowtotakerevengeeffectively.Therefore,hethinksofendingsuchtroublesandpainsbysuicide.However,thinkingoftheunknownworldafterdeath,Hamlethesitates.InhismonologueinAct3,Hamletexpressedhisviewontheissueofdeathandliving.Hamletisaskingwhichismorepreferable,tosufferinone’sownmindortakeastandagainstthetroubles.Herealizesthatthesituationheisinnowisforcinghishandtoact–heeithermustremainquietandforgetallthathappened,ormustworktoexposeandkillhisuncle.
