In1924jazz

  musicianandorchestraleaderPaulWhitemandecidedtoorganizeaspecial

  concerttoshowthatjazzwasseriousmusic.Gershwinagreedtocompose

  somethingfortheconcertbeforeherealizedhehadjustafewweekstodoit.

  Andinthatshorttime,hecomposedapieceforpianoandorchestrawhichhe

  calledRhapsodyinBlue.Gershwinhimselfplayedthepianoattheconcert.The

  audiencewerethrilledwhentheyheardhismusic.Itmadehimworld-famousand

  showedthatjazzmusiccouldbebothseriousandpopular.

  In1928,GershwinwenttoParis.Heappliedtostudycomposition(作曲)with

  thewell-knownmusicianNadiaBoulanger,butsherejectedhim.Shewasafraid

  thatclassicalstudywouldruinhisjazz-influencedstyle.Whilethere,Gershwin

  wroteAnAmericaninParis.Whenitwasfirstperformed,critics(评论家)were

  dividedoverthemusic.Somecalledithappyandfulloflife,toothersitwas

  sillyandboring.ButitquicklybecamepopularinEuropeandtheUnitedStates.

  Itsillremainsoneofhismostfamousworks.

  GeorgeGershwindiedin1937,justdaysafterdoctorslearnedhehadbrain

  cancer.Hewasonlythirty-nineyearsold.Newspapersallovertheworld
