AtfirstIwouldliketoshareyoumyownexperience.
IbecameanEnglishteacherinXX.IwasveryexcitedtogivemyfirstEnglishclass.TheteachingcontentwasUnit1ofGrade3.Inordertogiveasuccessfulclass,Idesignedmyteachingplancarefully,anddidalotofpreparationwork,evensomebeautifulstickers.Iwouldlikethechildrentolovemyclassesatthebeginning.Duringthewholeclass,Iwasverybusytalkingalmostallthetime.Inmyopinion,themoreclearlyIexplain;thebettercouldthechildrengraspthecontent.Tomysurprise,itseemedthatthestudentsdidn'tunderstandatall,fewofthemwouldliketoraiseuptheirhands.Aftertheclass,theyevencouldn'treadthenewwordsproficiently,whichmademefeelveryunsuccessful.Ibegantorethinkofthisclass.Practicemakesperfect.Italkedtoomuch,butleftlittletimeforthestudentstopractice.Asweknow,welearnswimmingbygettingintothewaterandswimming.Welearntoplayfootballbygoingandkickingaball.WelearnEnglishbyusingittodothingsandnotjustbybeingtoldaboutit.WhenIprepareforthelesson,Ionlythoughtaboutmyself,suchas"Whattodoatfirst,whatIshouldsaynext"
Aftermyfirstunsuccessfulclass,Itriedmybesttogivethestudentsmorepractice.Inmyschool,thereareabout50studentsineveryclass,soIusethegroupworkingmethod.Igotthemintosmallgroups.Duringthegroupwork,weteachersaretheenablers.
Infact,thereisacontinuingdiscussabouttheamountoftimeteachersshouldspendtalkinginclass.TTTmeansTeachertalkingtimeandSTTmeansstudenttalkingtime.ToomuchTTTandnotenoughSTTarecriticized,gettingstudentstospeak-tousethelanguagetheyarelearningisavitalpartofateacher'sjob.Studentsarethepeoplewhoneedthepractice,inotherwords,nottheteacher.AgoodteachermaximizesSTTandminimizesclassroomwheretheteacher'svoicedronesonandondayafterdaywhereyouhardlyeverhearthestudentssayanythingisnotonethatmostteachersandstudentswouldbeapproveof.
