The averageU.S.temperaturewas54.4°F,2.4°Fabovethe20th centuryaverage,andsecondonlyto 2012'srecordwarmth. Thiswasalsothe19thconsecutiveyearwithaveragetemperaturesabovetheaverageforthecentury. 

Everystatereported above-averageannualtemperatures.ThewarmingwasparticularlypronouncedacrossmostoftheeasternhalfofthecountryinDecember,whenmanyplacessawtemperatures30degreesabovenormalandmanyrecordswereset. 

ThismirroredchangesseenintheArcticthatmonth,whentemperaturesspikedto50degreesabovenormal.PartofthiswarmingwasdrivenbyastrongElNiño,orperiodicwarminginthePacificOcean,butsomeofitcanalsobeattributedtoglobalwarming,saysmeteorologistEricHolthaus,whowasnotinvolvedwiththefederalreport. 

Theanalysis comeslessthanamonthaftertheU.S.and194othercountriessignedanagreementinParistomoreaggressivelycountertheeffects ofclimatechange. 

“EvenifalltheinitialtargetsinParisaremet,we’llonlybepartofthewaytherewhenitcomestoreducingcarbonfromtheatmosphere,”saidPresidentBarackObama atthetime.Still,theagreementrepresented“aturningpoint”bysettingup“thearchitecture"fordoingso,hesaid. 

NOAA'sclimatemonitoringcenterdoesn'tissuepredictionsforfutureweather,buttheagency'sClimatePredictionCenterdoes.Thatteam'sforecastforthenextthreemonthscallsforwarmer-than-averagetemperaturesinmuchofthecountry,althoughpartsofTexasandtheSoutheastmaybealittlecoolerthanusual.
