WhenNISTfirstexaminedmasks’effectonfacialrecognitioninJuly,itfoundthatalgorithmsweren’tgreatatidentifyingfaceswithmasks.Butthepandemichasgivendevelopersplentyoftimetofocusonthemaskproblem,andNIST’sdatashowsthatfacialrecognitionalgorithmsaregettingbetteratworkingwithmaskedfaces.“Somedevelopershavesubmittedalgorithmsafterthepandemicshowingsignificantlyimprovedaccuracyandarenowamongthemostaccurateinourtest,”thereportreads.NIST’spublicrankingforfacialrecognitiontestsbearsoutthisclaim.Eightdifferentalgorithmsnowholdfalseratesbelow0.05percent.

Theauthorsnoteanumberoflimitationstothestudy.NISTresearchersdidnotemployactualimagesofmaskedfaces.Instead,theyappliedmasksdigitallytoensureconsistencyacrossthesample.Asaresult,“wewerenotabletopursueathorough
