Knowledgeisonething,virtueisanother;goodsenseisnotconscience,refinementisnothumility,norislargenessandjustnessofviewfaith.Philosophy,howeverenlightened,howeverprofound,givesnocommandoverthepassions,noinfluentialmotives,novivifyingprinciples.LiberalEducationmakesnottheChristian,nottheCatholic,butthegentleman.Itiswelltobeagentleman,itiswelltohaveacultivatedintellect,adelicatetaste,acandid,equitable,dispassionatemind,anobleandcourteousbearingintheconductoflife—thesearetheconnaturalqualitiesofalargeknowledge;theyaretheobjectsofaUniversity.Iamadvocating,Ishallillustrateandinsistuponthem;butstill,Irepeat,theyarenoguaranteeforsanctityorevenforconscientiousness,andtheymayattachtothemanoftheworld,totheprofligate,totheheartless,pleasant,alas,andattractiveasheshowswhendeckedoutinthem.Takenbythemselves,theydobutseemtobewhattheyarenot;theylooklikevirtueatadistance,buttheyaredetectedbycloseobservers,andinthelongrun;andhenceitisthattheyarepopularlyaccusedofpretenseandhypocrisy,not,Irepeat,fromtheirownfault,butbecausetheirprofessorsandtheiradmirerspersistintakingthemforwhattheyarenot,andareofficiousinarrogatingforthemapraisetowhichtheyhavenoclaim.Quarrythegraniterockwithrazors,ormoorthevesselwithathreadofsilk,thenmayyouhopewithsuchkeenanddelicateinstrumentsashumanknowledgeandhumanreasontocontendagainstthosegiants,

知识是一回事,美德是另一回事。

好意并非良心,优雅并非谦让,广博与公正的观点也并非信仰。

哲学,无论多么富有启迪和深奥莫测,都无法驾驭情感,不具备有影响力的动机,不具有导致生动活泼的原理。

文科教育并不造就基督教徒抑或天主教徒,而是造就了绅士。

造就一个绅士诚为美事。

有教养的才智,优雅的情趣,正直、公正而冷静的头脑,高贵而彬彬有礼的举止--这些是与渊博的学识生来固有的品质,它也是大学教育的目的。

对此我提倡之,并将加以阐释和坚持。

然而我要说的是,它们仍然不能确保圣洁,或甚至不能保证诚实。

它们可以附庸于世故的俗人,附庸于玩世不恭的浪子。

唉,当他们用它伪装起来时,就更增加了他们外表上的冷静、快活和魅力。

就其本身而言,它们似乎已远非其本来面目,它们似乎一远看的美德,经久久细察可探知。

因此它们受到广泛的责难,指责其虚饰与伪善。

Aperson,likeacommodity,needspackaging.Butgoingtoofarisabsolutelyundesirable.Alittleexaggeration,however,doesnoharmwhenitshowstheperson'suniquequalitiestotheiradvantage.Todisplaypersonalcharminacasualandnaturalway,itisimportantforonetohaveaclearknowledgeofoneself.Amasterpackagerknowshowtointegrateartandnaturewithoutanytracesofembellishment,sothatthepersonsopackagedisnocommoditybutahumanbeing,livelyandlovely.Ayoungperson,especiallyafemale,radiantwithbeautyandfulloflife,hasallthefavorgrantedbyGod.Anyattempttomakeupwouldbeself-defeating.Youth,however,comesandgoesinamomentofdoze.Packagingforthemiddle-agedisprimarilytoconcealthefurrowsploughedbytime.Ifyoustillenjoylife'sexuberanceenoughtoretainself-confidenceandpursuepioneeringwork,youareuniqueinyournaturalqualities,andyourcharmandgracewillremain.Elderlypeoplearebeautifuliftheirriveroflifehasbeen,throughplains,mountainsandjungles,runningitscourseasitshould.Youhavereallylivedyourlifewhichnowarrivesatacomplacentstageofserenityindifferenttofameorwealth.Thereisnoneedtoresorttohair-dyeing;thesnow-cappedmountainisitselfabeautifulsceneoffairyland.Letyourlookschangefromyoungtooldsynchronizingwiththenaturalageingprocesssoastokeepinharmonywithnature,forharmonyitselfisbeauty,whiletheotherwayroundwillonlyendinunpleasantness.Tobeintheelder'scompanyislikereadingathickbookofdeluxeeditionthatfascinatesonesomuchastobereluctanttopartwith.Aslongasonefindswhereonestands,oneknowshowtopackageoneself,justasacommodityestablishesitsbrandbytherightpackaging.

人如商品要包装,但切忌过分包装。

夸包装,要善于展示个性的独特品质。

在随意与自然中表现人的个性美,重要的是认识自己,包装的高手在于不留痕迹,外在的一切应与自身浑然一体,这时你不再是商品,而是活生生的人。

  青年有着充盈的生命的底气,她亮丽诱人,这是上帝赐予的神采,任涂抹都是多余的败笔,青春是个打个盹就过去的东西。

中年的包装主要是修复岁月的磨损,如果中年的生命依然有开拓丰满与自信,便会成年人,如果你生命的河流正常地流过,流过了平原高山和丛林,那么你是美的。

你的美充满了安详与淡泊,因为你真正地生活过。

老年人不要去染白发,老人的白发像高山的积雪,有种仙境之美。

人该年轻时就年轻,该年老时就年老,这是与自然同步,这就是和谐。

和谐就是美,反之就是丑。

Threepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegovernedmylife:

thelongingforlove,thesearchforknowledge,andunbearablepityforthesufferingofmankind.Thesepassions,likegreatwinds,haveblownmehitherandthither,inawaywardcourseoveradeepoceanofanguish,reachingtotheveryvergeofdespair.Ihavesoughtlove,first,becauseitbringsecstasy—ecstasysogreatthatIwouldoftenhavesacrificedalltherestofmylifeforafewhoursforthisjoy.Ihavesoughtit,next,becauseitrelievesloneliness—thatterriblelonelinessinwhichoneshiveringconsciousnesslooksovertherimoftheworldintothecoldunfathomablelifelessabyss.Ihavesoughtit,finally,becauseintheunionofloveIhaveseen,inamysticminiature,theprefiguringvisionoftheheaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveimagined.ThisiswhatIsought,andthoughitmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,thisiswhat—atlast—Ihavefound.WithequalpassionIhavesoughtknowledge.Ihavewishedtounderstandtheheartsofmen.Ihavewishedtoknowwhythestarsshine...Alittleofthis,butnotmuch,Ihaveachieved.Loveandknowledge,sofarastheywerepossible,ledupwardtowardtheheavens.Butalwayspitybroughtmebacktoearth.Echoesofcriesofpainreverberateinmyheart.Childreninfamine,victimstorturedbyoppressors,helplessoldpeople—ahatedburdentotheirsons,andthewholeworldofloneliness,poverty,andpainmakeamockeryofwhathumanlifeshouldbe.Ilongtoalleviatetheevil,butIcannot,andItoosuffer.Thishasbeenmylife.Ihavefounditworthliving,andwouldgladlyliveitagainifthechancewereofferedme.

 吾生三愿,纯朴却激越:

一曰渴望爱情,二曰求索知识,三曰悲悯吾类之无尽苦难。

此三愿,如疾风,迫吾无助飘零于苦水深海之上,直达绝望之彼岸。

受饥饿之婴,遭压迫之民,为儿女遗弃之无助老叟,加之天下之孤寂、贫穷、苦痛,具令吾类之生难以卒睹。

吾愿穷毕生之力释之,然终不能遂愿,因亦悲极。

 

  吾生若此而已,然吾颇感未枉此生;若得天允,当乐而重为之。

Passage4.ALittleGirl

Sittingonagrassygrave,beneathoneofthewindowsofthechurch,wasalittlegirl.Withherheadbentbackshewasgazingupattheskyandsinging,whileoneofherlittlehandswaspointingtoatinycloudthathoveredlikeagoldenfeatheraboveherhead.Thesun,whichhadsuddenlybecomeverybright,shiningonherglossyhair,gaveitametallicluster,anditwasdifficulttosaywhatwasthecolor,darkbronzeorblack.Socompletelyabsorbedwassheinwatchingthecloudtowhichherstrangesongorincantationseemedaddressed,thatshedidnotobservemewhenIroseandwenttowardsher.Overherhead,highupintheblue,alarkthatwassoaringtowardsthesamegauzycloudwassinging,asifinrivalry.AsIslowlyapproachedthechild,Icouldseebyherforehead,whichinthesunshineseemedlikeaglobeofpearl,andespeciallybyhercomplexion,thatsheuncommonlylovely.Hereyes,whichatonemomentseemedblue-gray,atanotherviolet,wereshadedbylongblacklashes,curvingbackwardinamostpeculiarway,andthesematchedinhuehereyebrows,andthetressesthatweretossedabouthertenderthroatwerequiveringinthesunlight.AllthisIdidnottakeinatonce;foratfirstIcouldseenothingbutthosequivering,glittering,changefuleyesturnedupintomyface.Graduallytheotherfeatures,especiallythesensitivefull-lippedmouth,grewuponmeasIstoodsilentlygazing.Hereseemedtomeamoreperfectbeautythanhadevercometomeinmyloveliestdreamsofbeauty.Yetitwasnotherbeautysomuchasthelookshegavemethatfascinatedme,meltedme.

小女孩

在教堂的一扇窗下长满绿草的坟堆上,坐着个小女孩。

她仰着头,望着天空,唱着歌儿。

她的小手指点着一朵飘浮在她头顶的金色羽毛般的小彩云。

突然间,显得格外灿烂,照在她光泽的头发上,给它涂上一层金属似的光彩,很难说出它突竟是什么颜色,是深褐色,还是黑色。

她是那么全神贯注地望着彩云,她那奇妙的歌声,或可说是喃喃自语,似乎是对着那彩云而发的。

因而她没有注意到我站起身来朝她走去。

在她上空高高的蓝天里,一只展翅飞向那朵轻盈透明的彩云的云雀也在歌唱,似乎在与她赛e(。

我慢步向小女孩走去,她那在下如同珍珠一样圆润的前额,特别是她那肤色,使我感到她真是异常可爱。

媳耶黑黑的长睫毛非常别致地朝后弯曲着,掩映着一双一会儿象是蓝灰色的,一会儿又象是紫罗兰色的眼睛。

她的长睫毛同她的眉毛和头发色泽调和,披拂在她娇嫩的脖子上的发绺,在里轻轻飘动。

我并没有马上领略到这一切,因为我一开始只注意了那双闪闪发光、富于表情、盯着我看的眼睛。

我伫立在一边默默地注视着她,才渐渐地看清了她容貌的其他部分,特别是那灵敏而又丰满的小嘴。

WhenintheCourseofhumanevents,itbecomesnecessaryforonepeopletodissolvethepoliticalbands

whichhaveconnectedthemwithanother,andtoassumeamongthepowersoftheearth,theseparateandequalstationtowhichtheLawsofNatureandofNature'sGodentitlethem,adecentrespecttotheopinionsofmankindrequiresthattheyshoulddeclarethecauseswhichimpelthemtotheseparation.Weholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal,thattheyareendowedbytheirCreatorwithcertainunalienableRights,thatamongtheseareLife,LibertyandthepursuitofHappiness.—Thattosecuretheserights,GovernmentsareinstitutedamongMen,derivingtheirjustpowersfromtheconsentofthegoverned,—ThatwheneveranyFormofGovernmentbecomesdestructiveoftheseends,itistheRightofthePeopletoalterortoabolishit,andtoinstitutenewGovernment,layingitsfoundationonsuchprinciplesandorganizingitspowersinsuchform,astothemshallseemmostlikelytoeffecttheirSafetyandHappiness.Prudence,indeed,willdictatethatGovernmentslongestablishedshouldnotbechangedforlightandtransientcauses;andaccordinglyallexperiencehasshown,thatmankindaremoredisposedtosuffer,whileevilsaresufferable,thantorightthemselvesbyabolishingtheformstowhichtheyareaccustomed.
