Machinesinthehomehaveashorthistory.Sewingmachines,washingmachinesandtumbledriesarecommonenoughtoday,butahundredyearsagofewpeoplecouldevenimaginesuchthings.However,inventorshavedesignedandbuiltawiderangeofhouseholdmachinessincethen.Inmostcasestheinventortriedtopatent（申请专利）hismachine,tostopanyonecopyingit.Thenhetriedtoproducealotofthem.Ifthemachinebecamepopular,theinventorcouldmakealotofmoney.

In1790thefirstsewingmachinewaspatented.TheinventorwasanEnglishmancalledThomasSaint.Therewasnothingtomatchhismachineforfortyyears,andthensomeonebuiltasimilardevice.HewasaFrenchman,BartelemyThimonier.Neitheroftheseearlymachinesworkedverywell,however,itwasn’tuntil1846thataninventorcameupwithareallyefficientsewingmachine.HewasanAmerican,EliasHoweandhismachinewasgoodenoughtobeatfiveskilledsewingwomen.Hedidn’tmakemuchmoneyfromit,however.ThefirstcommerciallysuccessfulsewingmachinewaspatentedbyIsaacSingerfiveyearslater.
