Duringhischildhood,Petesufferedfromdyslexia(诵读困难)andalwaysfailedinhisstudies,resultinginhisleavingschool.ThenhejoinedDarrowSchool,whereheperformedsowellthathewonascholarship.HewasinvitedtobepartofNASA,buthewassoupsetwithsometeststhathedecidedtowalkoutoftheprogram.However,AlanShepardpersuadedPetetoapplyagainforNASA.Hewaschosenasthecommander(指挥官)ofApollo12,andlandedonthemoononNovember19,1969.

Shepard,alongwith110othervolunteers,wasinvitedtotakepartinAmerica’sfirstmannedspacemission.Hebecamethesecondperson(afterRussia'sYuriGagarin)totravelintospace.ShepardwasdiagnosedwithMeniere'sdisease,whichinterruptedhisfurtherspacetravel.However,hehadcorrectivesurgeryandwaschosenasthecommanderofApollo14:
