Divorceandfamilybreakdownwerevirtuallyunheardofjust100yearsago.Now,however,almosthalfofallmarriagesfail.Thisphenomenonissymptomaticofthegrowingdistancebetweenfamilymembersinmodernsociety.Inthisessay,Iintendtoexplorethesourcesofthisproblemalongwithsomepossiblesolutiontoit.
Chiefamongthecausesofthisproblemisthemodernlifestyle.Today’sparentshavetoworkharderthanthoseofpreviousgenerationstosupporttheirfamilies.Traditionally,oneparentassumedtheroleofbreadwinner,whiletheother—typicallythemother—actedasthehomemaker.Recently,though,doubleincomefamilieshavebecomethenorm.Consequently,anincreasingnumberofchildrennowgrowupinaparentlessenvironment.Littlewonder,then,thattheyfeelalienated.Anothercontributingfactoristhepassiveandsolitarynatureofmanymodernformsofentertainment.WatchingTVtoomuchtendstohaveanunfavorableinfluenceonthefamilyrelationship,bywhichImeanifonespendsthevastmajorityofhissparetimeontelevision,hewilllacksufficienttimeforcommunicationwiththefamilymembers,whichmaypossiblyresultinthealienationinthefamily.
Inordertoresolvethissenseofalienationwithinfamilies,Ibelievewemustfirstaddressitsrootcauses.Perhapsthemosteffectivemethodsofdoingthiswouldbeforgovernmentstoofferfinancialincentivestoparentswhochoosetoremainathomeandtakecareoftheirfamilies.Admittedly,suchincentiveswouldprobablynotfullycompensatecouplesforlostincome;however,theywouldatleastsoftenthehardshipoflivingonasingleincomeandprovideanalternativeforparentswhowouldratherremainathomebutareunabletodosobecauseoffinancialconstraints.Onefurthermeasurewouldbetopromotemoreinteractiveleisureactivitiesinthecommunitythroughpubliceducationcampaigns.
Inconclusion,Ibelievethatthisisclearlyaproblemofsuchcomplexitythatnosolutionislikelytobeworkableintheshortterm.However,Ibelievethatthemeasuresoutlineabovewouldconstituteagoodfirststep.
