AstheAsianfinancialcrisiscontinuesunabatedinitssecondyear,I,aneconomicsmajortrainedatoneofChina’sbestcradlesofeconomists,feelduty-boundtopursueadvancedstudies.OnlybydoingsocanIhopetomakeasignificantcontributiontothediscourseonChina’seconomicdevelopmentstrategyasthecountryendeavorstododgetheeconomicdebaclethathasbefallenitsneighbors.ImusthelpdecipherthepuzzleofhowtheAsianeconomicmiraclehasbusted.ItismystrongbeliefthatmycountrycandrawvitallyimportantlessonsfromthefailuresofotherAsianeconomies.

Mostofmyeducationtodateischaracterizedbypreeminence.agraduatefromtheBeijingNo.4SeniorHighSchool,oneofthecountry’sverybesthighschools,IdidmyundergraduateuniversitystudiesattheUniversityofInternationalBusinessandEconomics,amostrespectedinstitutionthatspecializesintrainingeconomistsandentrepreneurs.Atthisuniversity,Ireceivedextensivetrainingthatwasbothrigorousandvigorousineconomics.Exercisingdiligenceandcreativity,Iachievedanacademicrecordthatwastheenvyofmanyofmyschoolmates.SucheducationshouldprovidesolidgroundingformeasIseektovaultintohigherintellectualdomains.

Upongraduationin1997,IhavebeenworkingforChinaNationalChemicalSupplyandSalesCorporation,oneofthecountry’skeystate-ownedcompanies.IobtainedthepositiononthestrengthofmyoutstandingacademicrecordsaswellastheexcellentperformanceIexhibitedduringmyinternshipthere.Thejobissatisfyingintermsofbothremunerationandprestige,butitdoesnotgivemeabigenoughstagetorealizemyambitionofmakingmyselfaprominentChineseeconomist.

Iunderstandthat,intoday’sworld,thepowerofanationliesinitseconomicstrength.ThisisparticularlysoforChina,whichhastosupportalmostaquarterofthehumankindwithonlyafractionoftheworld’sresourcesandwealth.Whilethedevelopmentofeconomyisessentialtoeverycountry,noothercountryintheworldhastoshoulderthekindofresponsibilitythatChinadoes.WithaneconomythesizeofCanada’s,ChinahasapopulationthatincreasesbyaCanadianpopulationeverytwoyears,evenwhileitisenforcingastrictfamilyplanningrules.Thatmeansthat,tojustmaintaintheexistinglivingstandardsofitscitizens,ChinahascomeupwithaenoughjobseverytwoyearsforwhatamountstotheemploymentofeveryCanadian,youngorold,healthyorsick.Thisisadauntingtaskthatnocountryhaseverfaced.Thefulfillmentofthistask,nodoubt,callsforingenuity.

IamgladtoseethatChinaisfollowingapaththatithaschosen,firstandforemost,inresponsetotherealitieswithinitsownborders,eventhoughithasnotshunnedfromintegratingitseconomywiththatofthedevelopedworld.Withalmost20yearsofvigorouseconomicreforms,theChineseseemtohavestrucktherightbalancebetweenansweringthecallofacceleratingglobalizationanddefendingitsnationalinterests.Thisbalancehaspaidoffinmanyways.Thecountry’saverageeconomicgrowthrateofnearly10percentforalmost20yearsmakesitseconomythefastestgrowingamongallmajoreconomies.Theeconomicstrengthithasthusaccumulatedishelpingittostaveoffthefinancialmeltdownthathasravagedthetigereconomies.IwanttoknowwhatChinahasdonerightthattheothercountrieshavedonewrongandhowChinacanbuilduponitsimpressiverecordsofarforsustainedgrowthinthefuture.Sophisticatedanswerstothesequestionsrequiresophisticatedtraining,whichIhopeIcanachieveinyourdistinguishedprogram.

Myundergraduatestudies,thoughfarfromenoughformylong-termpurpose,haveadequatelypreparedmeforadvancedresearch..Iamnowsolidlygroundedinmathematics,statisticsandbasictheoriesofeconomics,allfundamentalsubjectsinlearningeconomics.IhavebeenparticularlyinterestedinGameTheoryandMoney&Banking.Tobroadenvision,Ihaveaudited,byspecialarrangementforthegiftedstudents,graduatecourseslikeFutures&SecuritiesInvestmentandInternationalMarketing,taughtbyoverseasprofessors.Throughthesecourses,IhavelearnedtheconceptsandtheoriesofWesterneconomics.Allthishasaddedtomyintellectualdepth.

WiththevigoroustrainingIreceivedinmyundergraduatestudies,IhavearrivedatsomebasicunderstandingoftheAsianeconomy,onwhichIwouldliketofocusmygraduatestudies.Ibelievethat,inspiteofthebreakneckgrowthinthe1970sand80softhetigereconomiesthatgaverisetothe“EastAsianMiracle”,theEastAsiancountriesfailedtobuildupsoundeconomicstructures.Theireconomicgrowthswerepoweredmorebytheinjectionoftremendousinvestmentsthananythingelse,whichledtowhathascometobecalledthebubbleeconomies.Intheirrushtoachievegrandiosegrowthstargets,theysetuponlyrudimentarysystemsofcontrolovertheirfinancialindustries.Asaresult,toomanyloanswereallowedtobesecuredonoverpricedrealestateandstocks.Suchasituationwouldresultingraveconsequencesifeithertherealestateorstockmarketcollapsed.WhenbothofthesemarketscrashedlastyearinoneafteranotherSoutheastAsiancountry,theirbanks’badloansmultiplied,settingoffdominoeffectsacrosswholeeconomiesthroughouttheregion.Thedevastationwassuchthat,morethanayearafterthecrisisbegan,fewpeopleinAsiacanseeanylightattheendofthetunneltoday.

ThebigquestionintheAsiancrisisisnowonChina.InthefaceoftheAsiancrisis,Chinahasdemonstratedremarkablestrengthandcourage.UnlikeinmostotherEastAsiancountries,theeconomyinChinaisstillgrowing,andtheChinesecurrencyisstillstable.Thedifferenceisspelt,Ibelieve,bythemeasuresthatChinahastakeninpreventingtheoccurrenceofabubbleeconomy.TheChinesegovernmenthasnotrushedtoblessrun-awayspeculationonthestockmarket,assomeotherAsiangovernmentsseemedtohavedone.Foreigninvestments,ofwhichChinahasreceivedmorethananyothercountryexcepttheUS,havebeencarefullychanneledintoinfrastructureprojectsandindustrialproduction.This,alongwiththeinconvertibilityoftheChinesecurrencyonthecapitalaccounts,haspreventedthekindofcapitalflightthathasunderminedthefinancialsystemsinotherAsiancountries.Amazingly,ChinahasbecomeapowerfulstabilizingforceinAsianeconomies,althoughthecountryhasbeenfaultedbysomeintheWestfornothavingembracedthefreemarketconceptasreadilyasotherdevelopingcountriesdid.Ithinkthestarkcontrastbetweenthesuccessofasomewhatmorecontrolledeconomyandthefailuresofthefreemarketeconomiesbegsformanyquestions.

ThestoryonChinaisofcoursenotoveryet,norwillitbeanytimesoon.WiththedeepeningAsianfinancialcrisismountingmoreandmorepressureonChina,theChinesegovernmentandbusinessesaredesperatelytryingtomaintaineconomicgrowthswhilecontinuingthecountry’sstructuralreforms.WedonotyetknowwhetherChinawillintheendbeabletotoughoutthecurrentcrisisthatkeepsknockingonitsdoors.EvenifChinacansurvivethisroundofcrisisunscathed,itwillhavetocontinueintegratingitseconomyfurtherwiththatofothercountries,therebyexposingitselfmoreandmoretothecapriciousforcesoftheinternationalfinancialmarkets.Intheprocess,Chineseeconomistswillhavetomeetthechallengeofansweringdifficultquestions,questionsthatmaynothavebeenaskedanywhereelse.Iwouldliketobeoneofthosemeetingthischallenge. 

Inapplyingforacceptanceintoyourprogram,Ihopethat,morethanlearningthestaidconceptsandtheoriesofeconomics,Icansharpenmyinsightswhentreadingonunmappedterritories.Iamattractedtoyourwiderangeofcourseofferingsandthevariedbackgroundsofyourfacultymembers.Iamconfidentthat,underyourseasonedguidance,Iwillgivefullplaytomyintellectualpotentialinacademicresearch.ItshouldcomeasnosurprisetoyouifIbecomeoneoftheforemostauthoritiesontheChineseeconomyafewyearsafterIgraduatefromyourschool.

BusinessStudies

MyinterestinBusinessStudiesdevelopedwhenIfirststudieditatGCSEwhichIenjoyedimmensely.ThiswasprovedwhenIwasawardedStudentoftheYearinBusinessStudies. StudyingBusinessStudies,AccountingandCommunicationStudiesatAlevelisenjoyableandIhavedevelopedskillsfromallthreeofthesesubjectsthatwillhelpmesucceedatuniversity,IalsohavecompletedanASLevelinInformationandCommunicationTechnology.Mymaininterestisininternationalbusinessandwouldliketoworkinthemarketingsector.Ihavegainedextensivebusinessunderstandingwithintheretailenvironmentduetomyparttimejobforthehighstreetstore,.OneofthemostimportantskillsIhavelearnediscommunicationanditsimportancetothesuccessofthebusiness.IhavelearnttocommunicateeffectivelywhileworkingasaSalesAdvisorandunderstandingtheimportanceofcommunication,havinggainedimportantskillssuchasworkinginagroup.Teamworkisanimportantaspectofbusinesshowever,individualperformanceisjustasimportant.Icanworkeffectivelyinateam,butIalsoammotivatedwhenitcomestoindividualperformance.ThishasresultedinmebeingStaremployee,twice.OneofmymanytasksthatIcompleteatworkismerchandisingtheshopfloorandmannequinswhichisachallengingtask.HoweverIhavegainedtheknowledgetomerchandisewhichisoneofthereasonswhyIhaveaninterestinmarketing.
