Inanexperiment,theresearchfoundthattomatoplantsgrewuptotwoinchestalleriftheyweresungtobyafemaleratherthanamale.

ThemosteffectivevoicecamefromSarahDarwin,whosegreatgreatgrandfatherwasthebotanist(植物学家),CharlesDarwin,oneofthefoundingfathersoftheRHS.

Intheexperiment,everyplantwasplayedadifferentvoice,andtheenvironmentalconditionsforalltheplantsremainedthesamethroughouttheexperiment.SarahDarwinreadapassagefromOntheOriginofSpeciesandbeatnineother“voices”.Herplantgrewnearlytwoinchestallerthanthebestperformingmaleandhalfaninchtallerthanhernearestcompetitor.Toprovetheresultsoftheexperiment,twoplantswerealsolefttogrowinsilence.

ColinCrosbie,GardenManagerattheRHS,said,“Wejustdon'tknowwhy.Itcouldbebecausetheyhaveagreaterrangeofpitch(音高)andtone(音色)thataffectsthesoundwavesthathittheplant.Soundwavesareanenvironmentaleffectjustlikerainorlight.”Alsotheresultsshowedthatwomen'splantsrosebyaninchmorethanmen'sandmuchmorethantheplantsleftincompletesilence.

SarahDarwinsaid,“I'mnotsureifit'smysweettonesorthetextthatIreadfromOntheOriginofSpeciesthatmadetheplantslisten,buteitherway,Ithinkitisanhonortohavesuchavoice,andespeciallyfitforme,becauseforyearsIhavebeenstudyingwildtomatoesattheNaturalHistoryMuseum(NHM)inLondon.”
