Asthelevelsofmobilephoneuseincreased,therewasagrowthinpoorsleepbehavioramongthestudents.Meanwhile,mentalhealthproblemsalsoincreased.StudentsinYear8whoweremorelikelytousephonesatnightwerefoundtohavehigherlevelsofdepression(抑郁)andlowerself-esteem(自尊心)oneyearlater.

LynetteVernon,leadauthorofthestudy,explainedthatphonesaffectoursleeppatternsbecauseoftheunnaturalbluelighttheyproduce.Thislightcouldaffectthelevelofhormones(荷尔蒙)inthebody,disrupting(打乱)itsbalance.

“ThemoreyousitinbedandwatchTV,playwithyourtablet,andplaywithyourphoneatthreeo’clockinthemorning,themorethesethingsaffecttheslowwavesofyoursleeppatternandgiveyourpoorqualitysleep,”MarkLevi,aSydney-basedsleepdoctorsaid.

Basedonthefindings,theresearcherssuggestedparentsshouldfocusonguidingtheirchildren’suseofmobiledevices.
