Girlsareunderrepresentedatmathcompetitions,generally.TheAmericanInvitationMathematicsExam(AIME)isaprogramofAmericanMathematicsCompetition(AMC).Participationinitisbyinvitationonly.Ofthe3,223studentswhotookpartintheevent,thisyear,roughly14inevery100participantsweregirls.

Thesenumbersarestrikingbecausegirlscanbejustasgoodatmathasboysare.Butsomehow,manygirlspickuptheideathatmathisn'tforthem.Andnotonlydotheyentercompetitionslessoftenthanboysdo,buttheyalsoarelesslikelytopursuemath-relatedcareers.Infact,justoneineveryfourU.S.workersinmathandcomputer-sciencefieldsisawoman.

Whenitcomestogirlsandwomenbeingunder-representedinmath,RandallConesays,"Thetroubleisaculturalone.it'sapersonalviewthing.HeisamathematicianandcomputerscientistatSalisburyUniversityinMaryland.Hesaid,"Thisviewaffectshowmanywomenstudyadvancedmathandfindjobsinfieldsthatrelyonmathskills."

Buttheproblemismorecomplex.In2016,tworesearchersattheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologyinCambridgeinvestigatedwhyfewergirlsthanboysrisetothetoplevelsofmathcompetitions.TheylookedatdatafromAMCevents.Hopingtobetterunderstandthisgender(性别)gap,theyfocusedonhigh-achievers.Agendergapinmathindeedexistsaroundtheworld,theyfound.However,theywerenotreadytosayforsurewhyhismightbe.Infact,theproblemislikelyduetomanythings.Butpeer(同辈)pressuremayplayarole.Itmightdissuadegirlsfromjoiningmathclubsorpursuingotheractivitiesthatcouldhelpthembecomemathsuperstars.
