firsttheGaels,whosedescendantsarethemodernScotsandIrish,someofwhomstillspeaktheGaeliclanguage;andsecondtheBritons,whogavetheirnametothewholeislandofBritain.ThesewerethepeoplewhomtheRomansconquered.TheRomansgavetheBritonsagooddealoftheircivilization,buttheyneversettledinBritaininverylargenumbers,sotheBritishracesurviveduntiltheoverthrowoftheRomanEmpirebythe“barbarians”,i.e.thenumerousGermanictribeswhichoverranthewholeofWesternEurope.
