Ihavebeengreatlyfascinatedbychemistrysincemyfirste_posuretothePeriodicTableofElements.Thenaturalorderofthefirst12elements,discoveredappro_imately450yearsago,madeitpossiblefortheelementstobeplacedonachartconsistingofrowsandcolumns,suchthatelementssharingacolumnwerediscoveredtohavesimilarcharacteristics.ThisledRussianscientistDmitryMendeleyevtopredictthee_istenceoftheelementwiththeatomicnumber32,germanium,aswellasitscolour,weight,density,andmeltingpoint.ThepredictedelementshavesincebeendiscoveredandIwasgreatlymarvelledatthisfeatamongstmanyothers.MyinterestinchemistryhasbeenfurtherstimulatedasIhavecontinuedtolearnmoreaboutthecharacteristicsoftheindividualelements,thenatureoftheiratoms,andhowtheyformfamiliarchemicalpoundsthatareparticularlycriticaltothee_istenceoflifeandthepracticeofmedicine.

AtRiceUniversity,Iplantolearnbroader-basedfoundationaltheoriesinmychosenfields.Withmysolidinterdisciplinaryknowledgeandmyabilityforthequickassimilationofnewknowledge,IintendtosecureformyselfaRAstatustodirectlystartmylaboratoryresearchundertheguidanceofmyfutureadvisor.IcanalsoworkasTAsothatIcanstudywhileteachingandconductingmyinternship.Icanapply,testandconsolidatethetheoreticalknowledgethatIacquireintheprocessof
