Mostsimply,engineeringistheartofdirectingthegreatsourceofpowerinnaturefortheuseandtheconvenienceofman.Initsmodernform,engineeringinvolvesmen,money,materials,machines,andenergy.Itisdifferentiatedfromsciencebecauseitisprimarilyconcernedwithhowtodirecttousefulandeconomicalendsthenaturalphenomenawhichscientistsdiscoverandformulateintoacceptabletheories.Engineeringthereforerequiresaboveallthecreativeimaginationtofindusefulapplicationsofnaturalphenomena.Itisalwaysdissatisfiedwithpresentmethodsandequipment.Itseeksnewer,cheaper,bettermeansofusingnaturalsourcesofenergyandmaterialstoimproveman’sstandardoflivingandtodiminishtoil.
最简单地说,工程是为了人类的应用与方便而对自然界存在的巨大自然力进行引导操纵的技术。
在其现代形式中,工程包括人力、金钱、材料、机械和能量。
工程与科学的不同在与工程主要关注如何有效的经济的支配自然现象,而科学家则发现这些自然现象并将他们明确的表述为公认的理论。
因此工程首先要求具有创造性的想象力来找出有效利用自然现象的方法。
工程通常不满足于现有的方法和设备,它总是寻求更新、更廉价、更好的方法来利用自然能源和材料,从而提高人们的生活水平,减小苦力。
Traditionallythereweretwodivisionsordisciplines,militaryengineeringandcivilengineering.Asman’sknowledgeofnaturalphenomenagrewandthepotentialcivilapplicationsbecamemorecomplex,thecivilengineeringdisciplinetendedtobecomemoreandmorespecialized.Thepracticingengineerbegantorestricthisoperationstonarrowerchannels.Forinstance,civilengineeringcametobeconcernedprimarilywithstaticstructures,suchasdams,bridges,andbuildings,whereasmechanicalengineeringsplitofftoconcentrateondynamicstructures,suchasmachineryandengines.Similarly,miningengineeringbecameconcernedwiththediscoveryof,andremovalfrom,geologicalstructuresofmetalliferousorebodies,whereasmetallurgicalengineeringinvolvedextractionandrefinementofthemetalfromtheores.Fromthepracticalapplicationsofelectricityandchemistry,electricalandchemicalengineeringarouse.

Acomputerisanelectronicmachinethatperformscalculationsandprocessesdataautomaticallyathighspeedaccordingtoaprescribedsequenceofoperations.Broadlyspeaking,thetermcanrefernotonlytoanelectronicmachinebutalsotooneofamechanical,analog,orothervariety.Althoughallthesetypesareused,computersusuallymeanelectronicdigitalmachinesbecauseelectronicdigitalmachineshavemanyadvantagesandarewidelyused.Computersvarygreatlyinsize;thesmallestcanbeincorporatedintoawristwatch,whilethelargestmayfillanentireroom.Theelectroniccomponentsofcomputersenablethemtoperformoperationsathighspeeds.Thefastestcomputerisabletoperformbillionsofcalculationspersecond.Computesareusedtosolvenumerousproblems,suchaspayrollcalculations,inventoryrecords,bankaccounttransactions,airlinereservations,andscientificandengineeringcomputations.Foreachproblem,theusermustsupplythenecessarydataandprepareanappropriateprogram(sequenceofoperations)bywhichthecomputercanprocessthedatatoproducethedesiredoutput.

Thebranchofscientificanalysiswhichdealswithmotions,time,andforcesiscalledmechanicsandismadeupoftwoparts,staticsanddynamics.Staticsdealswiththeanalysisofstationarysystems,i.e.,thoseinwhichtimeisnotafactor,anddynamicsdealswithsystemswhichchangewithtime.
研究运动、时间和力的关系的学科称为“力学”,它由两部分组成:
静力学和动力学。
静力学对静止系统作分析研究,也就是说在这些系统中时间并不是一个变量;动力学则研究随时间而变的系统。
