over50milesin7daysinthewildernessatthePhilmontScoutRanchinNewMexico!

WhileAdam'sScoutingachievementsareimpressiveontheirown,histimeinScoutshasnotalwaysbeensoeasy.

Adamhashemophilia,amedicalconditionthatcancauseseverebleedingfromevenaslightinjury.AndasaBoyScout,

spendingmuchtimeoutinthewilderness,itisquitecommontogetminorinjuries.Becauseofhiscondition,Adamhashad

tomisssomeScoutingactivitiesovertheyears.

ThefirstfewdaysofAdam'sbackpackinginPhilmontwentsmooth.Butonthe3rdday,whileunloadinghisgear

ataremotecampsite,hefeltasharppaininhisback.Adamtoldtheadultleadersabouthisbackandthathewasstartingto

notfeelwell.TheymadethedecisiontocallPhilmontbasecamptoseekmedicalattention.

Itwasgettingdarkandrainthreatened.Twodoctorssetoutintothenightonbackcountryroadsandthenhikedin

thelast1/2miletofindAdam.Theydidsometestsanddecidedtotakehimbackwiththemtobasecamp.Itwasatough

momentforAdamandfortherestofthescoutcrew.WhileAdamreturnedtobasecamp,therestoftheboysbackpackedon.

ToencourageAdam,theytookoneofhisshirtswiththemandtookphotosofitalongtheway,whichtheysenttohim.

AfewdayspassedandAdamwasfeelingbetter.Thedoctorsclearedhimtoreturntothebackcountry!
