AlthoughaspirinwasfirstsoldbyaGermancompanyin1899,ithasbeenaroundmuchlongerthanthat.Hippocrates,inancient Greece,understoodthemedicalvalueoftheleavesandtreebarkwhichtodayareknowntocontain salicylates,thechemicalinaspirin.Duringthe19thcenturytherewasagreatdealofexperimentationin Europewiththischemical,anditledtotheintroductionofaspirin.By 19l5,aspirintablets(片剂)wereavailableintheUnitedStates.
