Intheearly17thcentury,theideaofthe"GrandTour"wasborn.RichyoungEnglishpeoplesailedacrosstheEnglishChannel.TheyvisitedthemostbeautifulandimportantEuropeancitiesofthetime,includingParisinFrance,andRomeandVeniceinItaly.Theirtourslastedfortwotofouryears,andthetouristsstayedafewweeksormonthsineachcity.The"GrandTour"wasanimportantpartofyoungpeople'seducation-butonlyfortherich.

Inthe18thcentury,tourismbegantochange.Forexample,peopleintheUKstartedtovisitsometowns,suchasBathto"takethewaters".Theybelievedthatthewatertherewasgoodfortheirhealth.Solargeandexpensivehotelswerebuiltinthesetowns.

Inthe19thcentury,travelbecamemuchmorepopularandfaster.Whenthefirstrailwayswerebuiltinthe1820s,itwaseasierforpeopletotravelbetweentowns,sotheystartedtogoforholidaysattheseaside.Somestartedtohaveholidaysinthecountrysideascitiesbecamelarger,noisieranddirtier.

Travelingbyseaalsobecamefasterandsaferwhenthefirststeamshipswerebuilt.Peoplebegantotravelmoretofarawaycountries.
