BlackBearMisunderstandings

Here,FWC(FloridaFishandWildlifeConservationCommission)showssomecommonmisunderstandingsaboutFloridablackbearsinanefforttoincreasepopularunderstandingofFlorida’slargestlandmammal.

Myth#1:

Feedingblackbearsthatwanderintoyouryardhelpsthebears.

Thefeedingofbears,raccoons,andfoxesisagainsttheFloridalaw.Bearsareopportunisticfeedersandwillrememberwheretofindeasyfoodandreturntothelocation.Iftheycontinuetogainaccesstohumanprovidedfoods,theycanbecomefoodconditionedandhabituated.Bearsthatbegintoexhibitthosebehaviorscanbecomeapublicsafetyriskandpossiblybekilledbywildlifeofficials.Remember“Afedbearisadeadbear.”Ifabearisseeninyouryard,increasetheirnaturalfearofhumansbymakingloudnoisesfromasecurelocation.

Myth#2:

Blackbearsarestrictcarnivores(食肉动物)。

WhilethebearfamilyispartoftheOrder(目)Carnivora,theFloridablackbearisdescribedasanomnivore(杂食动物),eatingadietmadeupof80%vegetation,16%insects,and4%meat.Bearswillrarelytrytochase(追逐)downalargeanimal,suchasanadultdeer,forameal,becauseitwillresultinalossofenergy–alotofenergyusedtryingtocatchtheanimalwithverylittlechanceofasuccessfulcatch,thusnoenergygained.

OnereasonwhytheywereacceptedwasthattheforgeriesactuallylookeddifferentthanVermeer’sotherworks.Thedealerhadclaimed(声称)thattheforgerieswerefromanunknownperiodearlyinVermeer’sartcareer.Becausepainters’stylesoftenchangethroughouttheircareers,arthistoriansatthetimedidnotexpectthe“newdiscoveries”tolookexactlyliketheknownworksofVermeer.Infact,becausetheydidnotlooksimilartotheknownworks,expertsdidnotbothertolookatthemcarefully.Thisisbecauseexpertsexpectaforgertocopyfamouspaintingsascloselyaspossible.Oncetheartdealer’sfirstforgerieswereexpectedasreal,hewasfreetomakemore.Theotherscloselymatchedthefirstpaintingsinstyle,sotheywerealsoexpectedasrealVermeerpaintingsfromthesameearlyperiod.

AnotherreasonexpertswerefoolediswhatsomehistorianscallTheEmperor’sNewClotheseffect.InHansChristianAndersen’sstory,TheEmperor’sNewClothes,twocriminalsconvinceanemperorthatheiswearingbeautifulclothes,whenheisactuallynaked(赤裸的).Nooneintheempirewantstoadmitthattheycannotseetheclothesbecausetheybelievetheclothesaremagicandthatonlygoodpeoplecanseethem.Similarly,theartworldwasinfluencedbyafamousarthistorian,WilhelmvonBode,whosaidtheforgeriesweresomeofVermeer’sbestworks.BecausevonBodewashighlyrespected,otherexpertsbeganpraisingthe“newdiscoveries.”Atthetime,thismadeitdifficulttocriticize(批评)thepaintingsorsuggestthattheywerefakes.
