Boy,ohboy,peoplearegoingtohaveSOMEkindoftaxbillinBraintreethisyear.Andprobablyforthenextfewyearsaswell.Anddon’tforget,thissituationaffectsmorethanjustthetown’sinfrastructure.Realestatepriceswillsufferaswell.Whowantstomovetoatownwithcrumblingschools,badroads,andquestionablewater?

Thisfirstreportseekstodrawapictureofthemillionswholackinsurance.Itdoesnotofferanyrecommendations.“MuchofwhatAmericansthinktheyknowabouttheuninsurediswrong,”saidDr.ArthurKellermann,apublichealthprofessoratEmoryUniversitySchoolofMedicineinAtlanta,whoalsoworkedonthereport.TheCensusBureaureportedlastmonththat38.7millionswentwithoutcoverageforallof2000,comparedwith39.3millionstheyearbefore,thankstotheboomingeconomy.Expertssaythetrendislikelytoreversethisyear,giventhattheeconomywasslowingevenbeforetheSept.11terroristattacks.“Unfortunately,therecenteconomicslowdownmighthavereversedthemodestgainsincoveragethatwereseenin1999and2000,”saidKellermannonThursday.

Abouttwo-thirdofAmericansunderage65arecoveredbyhealthinsurancethroughtheirjoborthatofarelative,thereportfound.Thatmeansmanypeoplegainorlosecoverageastheymarryordivorce,changejobs,startorgraduatefromcollegeorgothroughothertransitions.Atsomepoint,oneoutofsevenAmericansgoeswithoutcoverageforafullyear;manyotherslackcoverageforshorterperiods.
