iamhonoredtoaddressyoutonight.onbehalfofthegraduatingmastersanddoctoralstudentsofwashingtonuniversity'sschoolofengineeringandappliedscience,iwouldliketothankalltheparents,spouses,families,andfriendswhoencouragedandsupportsasweworkedtowardsourgraduatedegrees.iwouldespeciallyliketothankmyownfamily,eightmembersofwhichareintheaudiencetoday.iwouldalsoliketothankallofthedepartmentsecretariesandotherengineeringschoolstaffmemberswhoalwaysseemedtobetherewhenconfusedgraduatestudentsneededhelp.andfinallyiwouldliketothankthewashingtonuniversityfacultymemberswhoservedasourinstructors,mentors,andfriends.

asithinkbackontheseven-and-a-halfyearsispentatwashingtonuniversity,mymindisfilledwithmemories,happy,sad,frustrating,andevenhumorous.

tonightiwouldliketosharewithyousomeofthememoriesthatitakewithmeasileavewashingtonuniversity.

itakewithmethememoryofmyofficeonthefourthflooroflopatahall-theroomattheendofthehallwaythatwastoohotinsummer,toocoldinwinter,andalwaystoofarawayfromthewomen'srestroom.thewindowwasmyoffice'sbestfeature.wereitnotforthephysicsbuildingacrosstheway,itwouldhaveaffordedmeaclearviewofthearch.butinsteadigotaviewoftheroofofthephysicsbuilding.ialsohadaviewofonecorneroftheroofofurbauerhall,whichseemedtobeafavoriteperchforvariousspeciesofbirdswhoalternatelywonperchingrightsforseveralweeksatatime.andihadaniceviewofthephysicscourtyard,noteworthyasagoodplaceforwatchingpeopleruntheirdogs.it'samazinghowfascinatingtheseviewsbecamethelongeriworkedonmydissertation.butmyfavoriteviewwasofanearbyoaktree.frommyfourth-floorvantagepointihadaratherintimateviewofthetreeandthevariousbirdsandsquirrelsthatinhabitit.occasionallyabirdwouldlandonmywindowsill,whichusuallyhadtheeffectofstartlingbothofus.

itakewithmethememoryoffailingthefirstexaminoneofthefirstengineeringcoursesitookasanundergraduate.irememberthinkingthecoursewasjusttoohardformeandthatiwouldneverbeabletopassit.soiwenttotalktotheprofessor,readytodroptheclass.andhetoldmenottogiveup,hetoldmeicouldsucceedinhisclass.forreasonsthatseemedpletelyludicrousatthetime,hesaidhehadfaithinme.andafterthatmygradesintheclassslowlyimproved,andiendedthesemesterwithanaonthefinalexam.irememberhowmotivationalitwastoknowthatsomeonebelievedinme.

与此同时，和我们的毕业生一样值得关注的是你们的家人，感谢他们这些年来对你们毫无所求的关爱与支持。

感谢在座的父母与祖父母们，你们的孩子非常优秀。

感谢你们让自己的孩子来到这所学校，正因为如此，密歇根大学才成为更加丰富多元、优秀的学校。

我明白这种感觉。

毕业生们，我将和你们一起离开密歇根大学。

离开这里，你们将开始第一份工作，或者选择继续学习，而我将结束自己45年的高等教育生涯。

作为密歇根大学校长，与你们在一起进行我最后一次毕业演讲，我感到荣幸之至。

回顾我在密歇根大学的所有时光，给我印象最深刻的是所有密歇根的学子们。

你们让我欣喜，激发我的灵感，当然，偶尔也制造一些小麻烦。

最重要的是，你们在密歇根留下了永恒的印记，也为这所世界上最伟大的公立大学之一作出了贡献。

50年前，在这个体育场里，林登·约翰逊（lyndonjohnson）总统站在1964届毕业生面前分享他对一个伟大社会的憧憬。

他谈到充满活力的城市，未受污染的河流与清新的空气。

他认为，公立学校中的每一个孩子应不分阶级、不分区域，都享有优质的教育资源。

约翰逊告诉学生们，无论何人在何时都可以享有教育的机会。

你们是未来的希望，你们可以为实现一个充满美德和精神信仰的社会尽一份力。

约翰逊总统之所以选择了密歇根大学来进行这样一场雄心勃勃的演讲，原因之一是，他认为密歇根大学的学生们在将来会有所作为，而我们也确实是这样。

美德与奋发进取的精神已经融入我们的灵魂。

几十年间，学生们在不断影响和塑造着这所大学。

他们曾在校园里种下第一棵树。

他们欢迎一个因为肤色而处处被拒的拉丁裔学生，那时才1877年。

学生们热心于清理对角广场上的障碍物，帮助住校女生，期望校园生活更加多元化……还有在橄榄球比赛中争取更好的名次。

我想为大家介绍一些在我任职期间的学生，他们的人生经历和所受的争议就能很好证明我所说的这些。

克里斯·阿姆斯特朗（chrisarmstrong）是一名学生会主席，我认为他每天所处理的日常事务非常普通，为了更好的食堂伙食、更自由的住宿安排，以及更低的学费而奔忙。

但让克里斯有所不同的是，他是一名同性恋者。

这使得他成为众矢之的。

他默默忍受着公众对他的侮辱。

经历了这一切，他仍然忠实于自己，忠实于密歇根大学，他依旧选择为平等、宽容和同情大声疾呼。

他让人们明白，侵犯一个人就意味着侵犯一个群体。

他用尊严和教育不懈争取，终于获得了胜利。

我为他感到骄傲。

我也记得德纳尔·罗宾逊（denardrobinson），不仅为他在密歇根体育场上的卓越成绩，更为他是这里的一名学生而骄傲。

去年这个时候，我在毕业演讲之后遇见了德纳尔一家人。

他正向每一个家庭成员展示自己的学校，并且邀请我与他们一起拍家庭照。

我从来都没见过一名学生运动员如此热爱自己的大学生活。

他的热情是有感染力的，是他让我们更加热爱安阿伯（密歇根大学主校区所在地）。

我仍然深受穆罕默德·达尔（mohammaddar）的启发，他是家里第一个上大学的人，那时他的四个哥哥都被关进了监狱。

支付大学费用对他来说像一场战役。

他的父亲把医保的钱省下来，又凑了一些钱供儿子上学。

这注定是一个致命的选择——穆罕默德大三那年，他的父亲因癌症去世了。

达尔怎样应对如此大的打击呢?

他选择通过领导密歇根大学学生会来帮助其他人。

他前往兰辛（lansing），为高等教育争取更多的国家支持。

他的努力终于得到了回报，直到现在，他作为一名医生仍然以无私的精神为人们服务。

我佩服像考特尼·梅西埃（courtneymercier）、安德烈·威尔逊（andrewilson）和丹尼尔·莫拉莱斯（danielmorales）这样的学生，他们的精神激励着我们每一个人，让我们的学校在艰难的环境中更加卓越。

考特尼用他那非凡的口才坚持说服我们致力于环保事业，同时她带领我们为学校制定了一系列的可持续发展计划。

安德烈提倡学校要为毕业生提供更好的医疗保健服务。

丹尼尔为无证移民的学费公平问题不懈地努力。

在这些学生的影响下，密歇根大学逐渐拥有了一种更加包容、彼此互尊互助的氛围，使当代家庭在面临经济和法律挑战时的观察力日益敏锐。

学校规章制度是院长和各位大学管理者制定的。

但是，是你们让我们身临其境，看到了政策的弊端，是你们参与了会谈并且影响着政策制定的方向。

你们用超出实际年龄的思维进行严谨而缜密的辩论，用坚定的承诺影响着我们，进而改变了这一切。

这些都是密歇根大学毕业生的特质，并且这些特质将助你们前行。

作为校长，我应该在这个特殊的日子里给你们建议，鼓励你们经常运用在这里学到的批判性思维，并用我们大学长期以来的服务精神回馈社会。

其实我本不需要告诉你们这些。

因为你们本身就可以做得很好，不管你们前方的道路是什么。

相反的，我要感谢你们。

感谢你们让密歇根大学更加强大与睿智，更加具有创新与创造力。

感谢你们这些精英人才让社会拥有更加优秀的学校、健康的社区、高效的技术。

更感谢你们让我就任校长期间的时光成为我职业生涯中最充实的一段。

我从开始就在说，我们都在感受着怀旧之情，因为我们在密歇根大学的时光越来越少。

我要讲最后一个关于学生的故事。

在世界大学生棒球大赛（collegeworldseries）的决胜局第10局里，比赛情况是，两个队友已上垒，而她也一步冲向本垒。

她是一名大一新生，全国的电视观众此刻都在紧紧地注视着她。

她就是萨曼莎·芬德利（samanthafindlay）。

她以迅雷不及掩耳之势，不仅击中了球，还把球狠狠地打进了看台的左外场。

多么激动人心的一刻。

从本垒传来尖叫声，这意味着她为自己的球队赢得了XX年全国比赛的冠军，这也是密歇根大学垒球队有史以来的第一次。

这就是密歇根大学：

竞争精神，富有深远意义的成就感，把帮助别人当作最好的奖励，成为密歇根大学狼獾队（softballteam）一员万分的喜悦。

密歇根大学的学生想要成为最优秀的人才。

你们就是考特尼，想要健康的生活环境。
