Withthecomingofpowerfulharpoonguns,steam—poweredboatsandtheslipwayinwhalingships,whalingadvanced,withmorewhalesbeinghuntedatarapidrate.In1931alone,29,649whaleswerekilled.Bluewhalesalsohaveaslowrateofreproduction.Afemalebluewhalegivesbirthtoonecalfeverytwoyears.Thismeanstherateofreductionofthewhale’spopulationcannotbecountered(抵消)bysuchariseinbirths.By1966,theInternationalWhalingCommissiondeclaredbluewhalesasprotectedanimalsandbannedbluewhalehuntingininternationalwaters.Butthenumberofbluewhalesremainslowduetoman’sdeep—seaactivities.Heavyseatrafficcausesaccidents,wherebluewhalesareinjuredbyshipsorcargovessels.Deep—seafishinginvolvesusinglargenetsandtrawlingequipment,inwhichbluewhalescangetcaughtanddrown.

TheInternationalWhalingCommissionhastakenstepstoprotectthesewonderfulcreatures.Committeesofexpertshavebeenformedtoworkagainstwhaling,entrapment(诱捕)andpredation(掠食)ofbluewhales.Buttheirpopulationremainslow.Recentbluewhalestatisticsindicatebetween12,000—15,000oftheseocean—dwellersremain.
