manchosetospendhislastdaysorhislasthours.Ispeak,ofcourse,offreemenwhohaveachoice,not

condemned(sentence判刑)criminals(犯人)whosesphere(area范围)ofactivitiesisstrictlydelimited(tofixthelimitsof限定).

Suchstoriessetusthinking,wonderingwhatweshoulddoundersimilarcircumstances(conditions;situation情况;环境).Whatevents,whatexperiences,whatassociations(交往)

shouldwecrowdinto(把什么挤进)thoselasthoursasmortal(终有一死的)beings?

Whathappinessshould

wefindinreviewing(lookingbackupon回顾)thepast,whatregrets?

SometimesIhavethoughtitwouldbeanexcellentrule(habit)toliveeachdayasifweshoulddie

tomorrow.Suchanattitudewouldemphasize(stress强调)sharply(鲜明地)thevaluesoflife.Weshouldliveeachdaywithagentleness,avigor,andakeenness(热心;渴望)ofappreciation(欣赏;评定)whichareoften

lostwhentimestretches(延伸)beforeusintheconstant(连续的)panorama(综观)ofmoredaysand

monthsandyearstocome.Therearethose,ofcourse,whowouldadopttheEpicureanmottoof“Eat,drink,

andbemerry,“butmostpeoplewouldbechastened(punished惩戒)bythecertaintyofimpending(about

Instoriesthedoomedheroisusuallysavedatthelastminutebysomestrokeoffortune(luck一桩幸事),

butalmostalwayshissenseofvaluesischanged.hebecomesmoreappreciative(有欣赏力的)ofthemeaning
