SomepeopleaccusethemovementofbeingcontrolledbytheRepublicans.Otherssaytheactivistsareindependentthinkerswhowillopposeanypoliticiantheyseeassupportingbiggovernmentandbigspending.

TeaPartyactivistsseethemselvesasmodern-dayversionsoftheanti-taxprotestersfrombeforetheAmericanRevolution.

TheBostonTeaPartywasaprotestofBritishtaxationoftea.Onenightinseventeenseventy-three,agroupofcolonistswentontothreeshipsinBostonHarbor.Theythrewtonsofteaintothewater.

Thefamoussaying"notaxationwithoutrepresentation"expressedtheangerofthecolonists.

Thenewmovementtookshapelastyear.TheactivistsgainednationalattentionbyprotestingthehealthcarereformeffortsofPresidentObamaandtheDemocratsinCongress.

LindaHernandezisaTeaPartyactivistinMaryland.Shespentmanydayslastsummeryellingathertelevision,shesays,inreactiontothehealthcaredebate.ThenshebecameinvolvedwithalocalTeaPartygrouponline.

ShejoinedseveralbusloadsofTeaPartyactivistsinWashingtonlastweek.

Theyprotestedoutsidethepresident'shealthcaremeetingwithDemocraticandRepublicanlawmakers.

Butconservativesarenottheonlyonesorganizing.AnothernewgrouphasbeengrowingthroughFacebookinreactiontotheTeaParty.TheCoffeePartyMovementusestheslogan"WakeUpandStandUp."

Itsfounder,AnnabelPark,isadocumentaryfilmmaker.ShesaystheCoffeePartysharestheTeaParty'sunhappinesswithCongress.Butshesaysfixingthegovernmentdoesnothavetomeanmakingittheenemy.

Malaysiancities,likeKualaLumpur,alreadyhavetheinfrastructureneeded-modernbuildings,goodpublictransportationandhigh-speedelectroniccommunications-tosupportagrowingtechnologysector.

TheMalaysiangovernment'sinvestmentinresearchisalsostartingtopayoff.InadditiontoHamdan'swork,studentsandprofessorsarealsodevelopingnewmedicaltechnologytodetectheartandhearingproblems.Hamdansays,althoughthisresearchhassucceededindevelopingnew,innovativetechnology,theprivatesectorhasbeenslowtoutilizeitforcommercialapplication.

"Themainchallengeistryingtoconvinceespeciallytheindustry,becauseinthepastit'sverydifficultforus[in]thelocal[community]toconvincetheindustrythatwehaveaproductthatcanbecommercialized,"hesaid.

However,Malaysia'smainchallengeismakingitseconomymorecompetitive.Forfourdecades,thegovernmentemployedapolicyofracialpreferencesforethnicMalays.Thepolicy'sgoalwastoclosethegapbetweenrichbusinessmen,mostlyChinese,andthepoor,whoweremostlyMalay.KimLengsays,althoughthepolicysucceededincreatingavibrantMalaymiddleclass,italsostifledcompetition.

"Somegoodpolicies,overtime,becomebadpolicies,iftheyarenotchanged,iftheydonotkeepupwiththings,"hesaid.

Lastyear,thegovernmentannouncedanewpolicyweakeningarequirementthatcompaniesreserve30percentoftheirsharesforethnicMalays.Lengsays,inthelong-term,liberalizationoftheeconomywillcreatenewjobsandopportunitiesbut,fornow,thecountry'straditionalmanufacturingbasewillcontinuetoshrink.

"Intheshorttermtherewillbepain.Therewillbeobjectionstoopeningupthemarkets.Therewillbetheneedforgovernmentinterventiontoelevate,nottorollback,thisliberalizationorexpansion,marketexpansion,butactuallytoassisttheseindustriesincopingwithanintensifiedcompetitionfromthesecountries,"hesaid.

Hesays,overtime,equalopportunitycouldturnMalaysia'sethnicdiversityintoaneconomicadvantage.ThelanguageandculturallinksbetweenChineseandIndianethnicminorities,inparticular,couldhelpincreaseeconomictiesbetweenMalaysiaandthetwolargesteconomiesinAsia.
