Everyyear,millionsofyoungpeopletaketimeouttohelpothersasvolunteers.Manyofthemdothisduringagapyearbetweenfinishingschoolandstartinginhighereducation.Volunteerslearntosolveproblems,worktogetherasateamanddeveloptheirpersonalities.Communitiesinneedgethelptheycouldn’taffordtopayfor.InBritain,oneofthemainagenciesforvoluntaryworkisRaleighInternational.Itarrangesforthousandsofpeople,agedbetween17and25,tohelpoutintheirowncountryorabroad.Thisgroupof100peoplehasjustarrivedatthebasecampinCostaRica.Inthenexttenweeks,theyaretakingpartinthreedifferentprojects.Oneoftheprojectsisenvironmental,onecommunity-basedandoneanadventureproject.Butfirst,theyhavetrainingfortheconditionstheywillencounter.FortheenvironmentalprojectatCuru,thevolunteersaregoingtohelptobuildanartificialreeffromrecycledmaterials.Thisformsaprotectiveenvironmentforthefishtobreedandfeed.Ithelpsthelocaleconomyofcommercialfishingandprotectsthenaturalreefsfromover-fishinganddestruction.Thecommunityprojectisinoneofthepoorestruralareasintheworld.InthevillageofElPorvenir,volunteersaregoingtomakebricks.They’regoingtohelptobuildastorehousefortheimportantsesamecrop.Iftheyhavemorestorage,thevillagerswillbeabletomakemoremoneyfromsellingsesame.Volunteersalsotakepartinasurvivalactivity.Tomorrow,thisgroupistrekkingtothesummitofCostaRica’shighestmountain,MountChirripo.Attheendofthetenweeks,thevolunteersareproudthattheireffortshavehelpedtoimprovethelivesofthepeopleandtheenvironmentofCostaRicaandNicaragua.
