ItwasanewschoolyearandanewschoolforthesixthgradersatHemlockMillsMiddleSchool.AmyAshwoodandBobbyAroniwouldsoonbetherewithalltheotherkidswhohadgraduatedfromHemlockMillsElementarySchool.TheyjoinedthegraduatesofTigerElementaryandFallonElementary:
thebrandnewfreshmanclass.
AmywassittingontheschoolbuswithBobbyastheyrodesteadilytowardthemiddleschool.“I’mgoingtogetofftoafreshstart,Bobby,”shedeclared.“Nomorebeingnastytoeveryone.It’sgoingtobethenewniceme.”
Bobbyhadhisdoubtsthatthiswaspossible,buthewantedtoencouragehisfriend.“It’sworthatry,Amy,”hesaid.
“I’vealsodecided,”shewenton,“torunforpresidentofthefreshmanclass.Ireadallaboutitinthepaperswegotthissummer.I’mgoingtostartmypoliticalcareer.”
“Thatmeans,”Bobbycautioned,“thatyoureallydohavetobenicetopeople.You’llhavetothinkoffriendlythingstosaytoeveryone.Amy,youhaven’thadmuchpracticeatthat.”
“Youwatch.It’sthenewimproved,soontobepresident,me!
”Amystated.
Amywalkedthroughthewideentrancetothemainoffice.Anelderlyladybehindthehighcountersmiledandasked,“MayIhelpyou?

“I’dliketoregisterasacandidateinthestudentelections,please,”Amysaid.
“You’llhavetotalktotheviceprincipal,”theladyreplied.“It’sthatdoortoyourright.”
Thedoorwasopened,soAmywalkedrightin.Amanbehindalargedeskwasexaminingapieceofpaper.Hesignedit,andhandedittoawomanwhowasstandingtohisleft.Helookeduptogreethisvisitor.
“Mr.Grumbell!
”Amyalmostshouted.
Mr.GrumbellhadbeentheviceprincipalatHemlockMillsElementarySchool.
“AmyAshwood,surprisedtoseemehere?
EvenIgotpromotedtothemiddleschool.”
“Actually,Ithoughtyouwereoldenoughtoretire,”Amyreplied.
Mr.Grumbell,whowasforty-threeyearsold,sometimeswishedthathewasoldenoughtoretire.Mostofthetime,however,hedidnotliketobereferredtoasold.HelookedatAmyintently.“You’renotanicelittlegirl,”hesaid.
AmywasaccustomedtoMr.Grumbell’sgruffmannerandwasn’toffended.“Thatistrue,”sheagreed.“That’sbecauseI’mnotalittlegirl.”
“Hmmm,andwhatbringsyoutomyoffice,youngwoman?
”
“I’dliketobeacandidateforpresidentinthefreshmanclasselection.”
Thewoman,whoAmyguessedwasasecretary,reachedforasheetofpaperonthedeskandhandedittoMr.Grumbell.“Thankyou,Mrs.Franklin,”hesaid.
HeturnedthedocumentaroundandplaceditonthedeskinfrontofAmy.“Thisisapetition,Amy.You’llneedatleasttwentysignaturesfromotherfreshmen.Bysigningit,theysupportyourdesiretobeacandidate.”
Amypickedupthepaper.ShesmiledatMr.Grumbellandsaid,“I’mgladyou’reworkinghere,”andwalkedoutoftheoffice.
“Shenevereventhankedyou!
”Mrs.Franklincomplained.
Mr.Grumbellalmostsmiled,whichforhimwasasmile.“Yes,shedid,”hesaid.

ItwasdecidedthatBobbywouldbeAmy’scampaignmanager.AmydecidedandBobbydutifullycomplied.Itwasagoodarrangementinanycase.Bobbywasnoexpertongettingelected,buthedidknowhowtogetalongwithanyone.AndBobbywoulddohisbesttoteachAmyhowtogetalongtoo.
“Rulenumberone,”BobbytoldAmyastheywalkedtowardthecafeteriaforlunch,“isnottosayanythinginsultingtoanyone.Bytheway,thatincludesnotbeingsarcastic.”
“Butthat’swhatIdobest!

“I’mhavingsecondthoughts.”
Bobbysighed,“Doyoustillwanttobeclasspresident?

Amynodded.“OK,nosarcasm,”sheconceded.
“Here’swhatIthinkyoushoulddoforthefirstfewdaysofschool,”Bobbysaid.“Eatfast,andthenwalkaroundandgreetthekidsyouknowandmeetthekidsfromtheotherschools.Justtalkaboutanythingandbefriendly.”
“Greetandmeet,”Amygrumbled.“Willyouwalkaroundwithme?

Andofcourse,Bobbyagreed.
BobbywasnotquitefinishedwithhissecondhamburgerwhenAmybegansurveyingtheothertables.
“Ithinkwe’llstartoverthere,”shesaid,gesturingtowardanearbytable.
AmygrabbedBobbybythewristandtheywalkedtothetablewherefourkidswerehavingadiscussion.
“Hi,howareyouguysdoing?
”Bobbyasked.HeandAmyknewtwoofthekids,MissyLakelandandJoeBranski.
“Wewerejusttalkingaboutourfavoritemovies,”Joetoldthemastheysatdown.

Bobbywasencouraged.Amyhadactuallypaidsomeoneacomplement.Sheglancedathimasiftosay,“See,Icandoit!

NowBobbyknewthatAmywasreallyseriousaboutbeingfriendly.ShehadalwaysbeenespeciallysarcastictoMissywhentheywereinelementaryschool.Fortunately,Missyhadalwaysbeentoogoodnaturedtoletitbotherher.ThoughBobbyhadoftenwonderedifmanyofAmy’scommentshadn’tjustgoneoverMissy’shead.
“Ihaveafeeling,”Missyreplied,“ThatmyfavoritemoviewillbeoneIhaven’tseenyet.MyparentsarerentingTitanictonight.”

BobbyknewthatthismightbetoomuchforAmy.Hecouldalmostfeelthesarcasmtryingtoescapefromhermouth.
