Ladiesandgentlemen,mytitleofthespeechismuttonandsteakorcabbageandpotatoes.Today,I'dliketostartmyspeechwithmycollegelife.Myparentsgiveme600Yuanforaccommodationmonthly,andeverytimewhenIcheckmyaccountatthebeginningofamonthIfeellikeamillionaire.Therefore,Ialwaysimpulsivelyspendalargeamountofmoneyduringthefirsthalfofmonthenjoyingmutton,bacon,andsteakformeals,butinevitablyendupeatingonions,cabbagesandpotatoesattheendofeachmonth.
Well,indeed,Ishouldknowhowtoplanmymoney.But,inabroadersense,oneshouldplanthepresenttocreateabrightfutureinsteadofexploringthefuturefortheguaranteeofatemporarilysatisfyingpresent.Andthatlittletheoryalsoapplieswellwhenitcomestoourhumanbeings’future.Nowadays,wearedreamingofabrightfuturewhereenergyisnownotexhausted,wateriscleanandabundant,speciesnolongerextinctandpeopleliveinpeaceandharmonyonearth.Whetherthatdreamwillcometruedependslargelyonwhetherwedecidetoexploitthefutureforthepresentorplanthepresentforthefuture-whichmayinturnleadtocompletelydifferentfuturesofmankind.
Well,ifhumanbeingsallfollowmyexample,Ibelievewemayallendupeatingcabbagesandpotatoes.But,whatImeanbythisisthat,ifwekeeponexploitingthefuturebyoverusingtheenergy,overpumpingundergroundwater,ormassivelyslaughteringwildanimals,wemaybefacingafuturewhereenergyisexhausted,waterisdriedandspeciesaredyingout.Andofcourseinordertoobtainthoseindispensableresources,conflicts,competitionsandevenwarsmaystartagain;filingtheworldwithbullets,bombs,andbloods.
Well,thatisthefirstpossiblefuturewehumanbeingsmaybefacedwith:
dark,gloomy,andviolent—quitethecontrarytoourdream.However,ifwehumanbeingsadoptasenseofsustainabledevelopment,wecouldrealizehowimportantitistoplanthepresentforthefuture.Andinthatway,ourdestinymightchange.Byplanningthefuture,Imeantousewhateverwecanusepresentlyathandtochangethebadsituation.Forexample,facingenergycrisis,wecantryfromnowontodevelopacertainkindoftechnologythatcanturntheunlimitedsolarenergyintoallkindsofenergyweneed.Andinthesameway,watercrisismaynotbeaproblemifwetrytofindwaystoturnnaturalrainintodrinkingwater;andspecieswillbewellpreservedifweeffectivelyenforcerelevantlawsandmakepeoplerealizehowimportantitistomaintainspeciesdiversity.Andthenpeople,natureandsocietyareharmonizedandwecertainlyuseinoursecondpossiblefuture-bright,promising,harmoniousandpeaceful-exactlythesameasinourdream.Soladiesandgentlemen,nowlet'sgetbacktothematterofmyfood.
