The“OnlyChild”Generation

ThemajorityofChinesefamiliesnowhaveonlyonechildsincetheone-childpolicyhasbeeninplacefornearly20years.Bytheyear2001,therewasalready240million“onlychildren”,whichisaboutthepopulationoftheUnitedStates.Inthenextcoupledecades,the“onlychildren”generationwillbecometheelite(精英)ofoursociety.Nooneknowshowmuchheorshewillchangetheworld.

Astheonlychildinthefamily,heorshereceivedmoreelaborately(苦心经营地)attendance,sometimes,evenindulgence(放任).Parentsalwaystryhardtofulfilleachofhisorherrequests.Thosechildren,whoarecalledas“littleemperor”,areinthedangerofbeingspoilt,overpamperedandself-centered.

Asthecenterofthefamilies,thekids,withoutanysiblings(兄弟),stillfeellonely,whichistheoriginofmanykindsofpsychologicalillness.Neithertheparentsnortheclassmatescantakeplaceoftheroleofbrothersandsisters.

Seemsthe“onlychildren”arestillnotreadytotaketheirresponsibilities.Someelder“onlychildren”hasalreadygraduatedfromuniversities.Buttheystillcan’tbeindependentfromtheirparents.The“onlychildren”usuallyrequirelongerperiodtoseasonthechangeintheircareer,becausetheywerebroughtupinamoreshelteredandmoredependentenvironment.

Whentheirparentshavebeenretired,acoupleof“onlychildren”willhavefourparentsandevenmoregrandparentstolookafter.Itwillsurelybeadisasterifwedon’twellpreparetofaceit.
