Bycontrast,thedeathsattributedtoswinefluarethosedirectlycausedbyrespiratoryinfectionwiththepandemicvirus.Indirectdeaths-themajorityofthe36,000figureforregularflu-arenotbeingcounted.Thefulldeathtollfor2009H1N1fluwillnotbeknownforawhile,ifever.Perhapstherewillbefewerdeathsthannormalbecauseolderpeople,moreatriskfromsecondaryeventssuchasheartattacks,havesomeimmunitytothevirus.However,thetotalseemslikelytobehighersimplybecausetheviruswillinfectfarmorepeoplethannormal,anditkillsdirectlymoreoften.
