IntroductiontoDataProtectionManager 2007

SystemCenterDataProtectionManager（DPM） 2007isakeymemberoftheMicrosoftSystemCenterfamilyofmanagementproductsdesignedtohelpITprofessionalsmanagetheirWindowsServerenvironments.DPMisthenewstandardforWindowsServerbackupandrecovery—deliveringcontinuousdataprotectionforMicrosoftapplications,virtualization,fileservers,anddesktopsusingseamlesslyintegrateddiskandtapemedia,aswellascloudrepositories.DPMenablesbetterbackupswithrapidandreliablerecoveriesforboththeITprofessionalandtheend-user.DPMhelpssignificantlyreducethecostsandcomplexitiesassociatedwithdataprotectionthroughadvancedtechnologyforenterprisesofallsizes.ThefollowingfigureshowsanoverviewoftheprotectionprocessandthedatasourcesthatDPM 2007SP1protects.

UsingcomplimentarytechnologiesinadditiontoDPM’sactualsoftware,DPM 2007 SP1canperformabaremetalrecovery（BMR）torestoreanentireserverwithoutanoperatingsystem.Althoughrecoveringanentirecomputermayinitiallysoundappealing,therearefactorswherethefastestormostoptimalrecoveryactionistoonlyrestorethesystemstatecontainingtheregistryanduniqueoperatingsystembinariesoverapre-builtgenericserver—forexample,restoringthesystemstateforoneof200similarlyconfiguredbranchofficeservers.Inotherscenarios,insteadofrecoveringantiquatedhardwareandaserver’soperatingsystemthathasbeeninuseforsometime,itmaybemoreeffectivetosimplyrestorethedatatoanewerandfasterserver.Forthosescenarioswhereaserverhasaverycomplexconfigurationthatwouldbedifficulttorebuild,theabilitytoperformanimage-levelrestoreisideal.

WhenDPM 2007wasreleasedinthefallof2007,itwaspackagedwithasecondsoftwareofferingcalledtheDPMSystemRecoveryTool（SRT）,whichprovidedbaremetalrecoveryforcomputersrunningWindowsXPandWindowsServer 2003.WiththereleaseofWindowsServer 2008,theWindowsServer 2003built-inbackuputilitywasreplacedwithanewWindowsServerBackuputility（WSB）.TheWSBwasdevelopedbytheWindowsServerteamastheonlyintendedwayforaWindowsServertodoanimage-levelbackuporrestoreoftheWindowsServer 2008operatingsystem.

WiththereleaseofDPM 2007SP1,WindowsServer 2008isnowasupportedoperatingsystemforprotectionandrecoveryofdata.ThescriptingfeatureinDPM 2007SP1enablesbackupadministratorstobackupanyapplicationdata（forwhichDPMdoesnotprovidenativesupport）thatrunsonWindowsServer 2008.

Thiswhitepaperprovidesstep-by-stepinstructionsabouthowtouseDPM 2007SP1tocreateaBMRbackupofthecriticalvolumesofacomputerrunningWindowsServer 2008.Afteryoucreatethebackupcopy,youuseittorebuildacomputerintheeventofadisaster.

Prerequisites

YoumustperformthefollowingprerequisitestepsbeforeyoucancreateaBMRbackup:

1.InstallDPM 2007SP1ontheDPMserver.

2.InstallWindowsServerBackupontheprotectedserver.

3.ManuallyinstalltheDPMprotectionagentontheprotectedserver.Formoreinformationabouthowtomanuallyinstallaprotectionagent,seeInstallingProtectionAgentsManually（

4.InDPMAdministratorConsole,intheManagementtaskarea,ontheAgentstab,verifythattheagentinstallationwassuccessful.

5.Performthefollowingstepstofindthetotalsizeofallthecriticalvolumes:

A.TostartWindowsServerBackup,clickStart,pointtoAdministrativeTools,andthenclickWindowsServerBackup.

B.Ifyouareprompted,intheUserAccountControldialogbox,provideBackupOperatorcredentials,andthenclickOK.

C.OntheActionmenu,clickBackuponce.

D.IntheBackupOnceWizard,ontheBackupoptionspage,clickDifferentoptions,andthenclickNext.

E.OntheSelectbackupconfigurationpage,clickCustom,andthenclickNext.

F.OntheSelectbackupitemspage,selectEnablesystemrecovery.Forthepurposesofthisprocedure,useXgigabytes（GB）asthetotalsize.
