Formorethan60years,Legobricks(乐高积木)havebroughtsomuchfuntochildren.Now,anewtypeofLegoisintheworks.They’reLegoBraille(盲文)Bricks,andthey’rebeingtestedaroundtheworld.

LegoBrailleBricksaredesignedtohelppeoplelearnBraille.That’sasetofwritinginwhichlettersareshownbyraiseddots(凸点).Peoplewhoareblindorhavesomeproblemswiththeireyesusetheirfingerstoreadit.

AccordingtotheWorldHealthOrganization,36millionpeopleworldwideareblind.IntheU.S.,only10%ofblindchildrenlearnBraille.LegoBrailleBrickscanhelpchangethat.ThesmallraiseddotsonthebricksareplacedasBrailleletters.BlindchildrencanusetheseraiseddotstolearnBraille.

LegoplanstostartsellingBrailleBricksnextyear.Forsomeschools,thebrickswillbefree.Eachsetwillcontainabout250bricks.Alongwiththeletters,thebrickswillhavenumbersandmathsymbols.

TheDanishAssociationoftheBlindwasoneofthefirstorganizationstocomeupwiththeideaofusingLegobrickstoteachBraille.ThorkildOlesenisthepresidentofthegroup.In2011,Olesen’sorganizationshareditsideaforBrailleBrickswiththeLegoFoundation.OlesenexplainedtothetoymakerthattheraiseddotsonLegosaresimilartoBrailleletters.

Olesenisblind.Hesaysmanyteachersdon’thavethetoolsandskillstohelpkidslearnBraille.Sotheyteachwithaudio(音频的)tools,suchasaudiobooks.“Likeanyotherpeople,weneedtoexpressourselvesinwriting,”Olesensaid.“Audioisgreat.ButitcanneverreplaceBraille.Brailleisthesinglemostimportanttoolforusinordertolearntospellcorrectly,readandwritelikesightedpeople.”

Thefirstquestionnaireaskedtheseyoungadultstorecalliftheirparentstoldthemliesabouteating,leavingorstaying,spendingmoneyandsoon.Someexamplesofsuchliesare“Ifyoudon’tcomewithmenow,Iwillleaveyouherebyyourself”and“Idon’tbringmoneywithmetoday;wecancomebackanotherday”.Thesecondquestionnaireincludedquestionsthatcouldshowhowoftentheylietotheirparentsasadults.Lastly,theseyoungadultsfilledintwootherquestionnairesthataskedthemabouttheirpsychologicalproblemsandtendencytobehaveselfishlyandimpulsively(冲动地).
