ThestoriesMs.Lindgrenmadeupwereaboutawild,butgood-heartedyounggirlwholivedbyherselfinahousecalledVillaVillekulla.Thegirllivedwithherhorseandhermonkey.Shewasconstantlysurprisingherneighborfriendswithhercrazyadventures.

Butitwasn’tuntilthreeyearslaterthatMs.Lindgrenbegantowritedownthestoriesshehadtoldherdaughter.Whenshefinishedherbook,shesentittoawell-knownpublisher,butthebookwasturneddown.Ms.Lindgrenkeptworkingonthebook.In1945,Ms.Lindgrenenteredherbookinacontestbeingheldbyadifferentpublisher.PippiLongstockingwonthefirstprize,andthebookcameoutinNovember.
