  thisistimferrisscirca1979 agetwo.youcantellbythepowersquat,iwasaveryconfidentboy--andnotwithoutreason.ihadaverycharmingroutineatthetime,whichwastowaituntillateintheeveningwhenmyparentsweredexxpressingfromahardday'swork,doingtheircrosswordpuzzles,watchingtelevision.iwouldrunintothelivingroom,jumpuponthecouch,ripthecushionsoff,throwthemonthefloor,screamatthetopofmylungsandrunoutbecauseiwastheincrediblehulk.(laughter)obviously,youseetheresemblance.andthisroutinewentonforsometime.

  wheniwasseveniwenttosummercamp.myparentsfounditnecessaryforpeaceofmind.andatnooneachdaythecamperswouldgotoapond,wheretheyhadfloatingdocks.youcouldjumpofftheendintothedeepend.iwasbornpremature.iwasalwaysverysmall.myleftlunghadcollapsedwheniwasborn.andi'vealwayshadbuoyancyproblems.sowaterwassomethingthatscaredmetobeginwith.butiwouldgoinonoccasion.andononeparticularday,thecamperswerejumpingthroughinnertubes,theyweredivingthroughinnertubes.andithoughtthiswouldbegreatfun.soidovethroughtheinnertube,andthebullyofthecampgrabbedmyankles.anditriedtoxxeupforair,andmylowerbackhitthebottomoftheinnertube.andiwentwildeyedandthoughtiwasgoingtodie.acampcounselorfortunatelycameoverandseparatedus.fromthatpointonwardiwasterrifiedofswimming.thatissomethingthatididnotgetover.myinabilitytoswimhasbeenoneofmygreatesthumiliationsandembarrassments.thatiswhenirealizedthatiwasnottheincrediblehulk.

  butthereisahappyendingtothisstory.atage31--that'smyagenow--inaugustitooktwoweekstore-examineswimming,andquestionalltheoftheobviousaspectsofswimming.andwentfromswimmingonelap--so20yards--likeadrowningmonkey,atabout200beatsperminuteheartrate--imeasuredit--togoingtomontaukonlongisland,closetowhereigrewup,andjumpingintotheoceanandswimmingonekilometerinopenwater,gettingoutandfeelingbetterthanwheniwentin.andicameout,inmyspeedos,europeanstyle,feelingliketheincrediblehulk.
