In2006,forexample,scientistsstudied2,800womenwhohadcancer.Theyfoundthatthosewhohadfewfriendsorfamilywerefivetimesmorelikelytodieoftheirdiseasethanwomenwithmanysocialcontacts.Also,evenhealthypeoplehadabetterchanceoffallingilliftheyfeltleftoutbyothers,accordingtotheBBC.

Theresultshavescientiststhinkingthatlonelinessmighthurttheimmunesystem(免疫系统),whichprotectsthebodyfromdiseases.

Hopingtoprovethistheory,Jaremkaandherresearchteamputvolunteers(志愿者)throughastresstest.Duringthetest,volunteerswereaskedtomakeanunpreparedspeechinfrontofagroupofstony-facedpeople.Theresearchersfoundthatvolunteerswhosaidtheywerelonelyintheirdailylivesfeltmorestressduringthetest.Andtheirbloodsamplesshowedthatallthestresshadmanagedtocauseharmfulchangestotheirimmunesystem.
