EdwardCokeusedtobeanarmyofficer,butheisinprisonnow.Everydayisexactlythesameforhim.

Itiswinternowandalltheothermengetupatsix,whenitisstillcoldanddark.Theyhavebreakfastatsixthirty.Workbeginsatseventhirty.Someofthemenworkintheprisonfactory,wheretheymakemailbags,butCokeoftenworksinthefieldsoutside.

Themenhavelunchattwelve.Lunchlastsanhourandthenthemengobacktoworkagain.Dinnerisatsix.Cokeusuallygoestotheprisonlibraryafterdinnerandreadsuntil9.30.Thelightsgooutatten.Thedayislong,hard,andboringandeverymanhasalotoftimetothink.Theyusuallythinkaboutwhytheyarethere.Cokedoes.Healwaysthinksabouttwomen.

OneofthemeniscalledEricMasters.Heusedtobeanarmyofficer,justlikeCoke.CokeknowsthatMastershasalotofmoneynow.Thesecondman'snameisHugo.ThatisallCokeknowsabouthim.MastersknowswhereandwhoHugois,butCokedoesn't.

EverynightCokeliesinbedandthinksaboutEricMastersandHugo.Thereisanotherthinghethinksabout,too.Escaping.HewantstoescapeandfindMasters,andthentheotherman.Cokeisinprisonforsomethinghedidnotdo.

Itissixo'clockonaverycoldwinterevening.AlloverEnglandpeoplearesittingdownintheirliving-roomsandarewatchingthenewsontelevisionorarelisteningtoitontheradio.Thereisoneveryimportantpieceofnewsthisevening.Itisthis:
