Successfulpublicationismoreamatterofplanningandpersistencethanbrilliance.----F.Mosteller
Togettheresearchpublished,undoubtedly,istheultimategoalofwritinganacademicarticle.Anauthormayhaveidentifiedthetargetjournalsintheacademicfiledshe/heworksinaseasyasshe/hedevelopstheresearchproposal.Fewauthors,however,workeffectivelyintheprocessofpublishingpapersuntilaftertheyhavepublishedafewmanuscripts.
Tosmooththepublishingride,theauthorsshouldknowthenuancesoftheprocessthatcansmooththejourney.
11.1ChoiceofTargetJournals
11.1)NecessarySelection
Althoughmostresearcherswouldlikeverymuchtopublishtheirwork,theproblemfornewauthorsisbreakingtheicebysubmittingtheirfirstmanuscripttoajournal.Sincetherearenumerousinternationalperiodicalsforscientists,engineers,andotherprofessionalstopublishtheirresearchresultsandthoughts,acarefulselectionoftargetjournalsisimportantforanauthortoimprovetheacceptanceratehispaper.Cautiousandcorrectjournalselectionprovestobealeadingfactorinpaperpublicationforthefollowingreasons:
(1)Thegreatvarietyofsciencesandtechnology.
(2)Theavailabilityofnumerousinternationalprofessionaljournals.(3)Seriousintersectionandoverlapping.(4)Rulesofpaperpublication:
onepaperisonlysubmittedtoonejournal.Multiplesubmission,orsimultaneoussubmission,tojournalsisnotonlyimmoralbutalsoimpermissible.Therefore,thesignificanceoftheselectionoftargetjournalspriortosubmissioncannotbeover-exaggerated.
Oneofthemainpurposeofthiscourseistomakepublishingpapersininternationaljournalseasierandfasterforthecourse-takers.Sincemanypapersaresubmittedtoprofessionaljournals,anysubmittedpaperwillhavetobecompetingwithothersforaplaceinafutureissue.
Asubmittedpapermust,ofcourse,beapieceofreallysoundscientificresearchwork,anditmustbewritteninclearandcorrectlanguage.Also,aswehaveknownfromthepreviousunits,eachjournalhasitsownguidelinesthathelpauthorsunderstandwhatthatjournalconsidersacceptable.
However,beforeawriterstartswriting,hemustdecidetowhichjournalheintendstosubmitthepaper.Oneguidelineisto“writeforwhatyouread.”Inotherwords,thewritermaystartbysubmittingarticlestothejournalshereadandthejournalshecitedinhisreferencelists.Thisunitandtheunitstofollowwillcontainmorespecificinformationtoguidepapersubmittersinfindingasuitablejournal.Theywilllearnmoreabouthowtoappropriatelyidentifythejournalsfortheirarticles.Also,theywillstarttheprocessofchoosingthejournaltowhichtheywillsubmittheirarticleduring,whichorafterthiscourse.
Remember:
Apaperwillbeacceptedonlybyaneditorwhoconsidersitstopicandformatappropriateforthosewhoreadthatjournal.EveniftheresearchiswonderfulandtheEnglishisexcellent,aneditormayrejectthearticlebecauseitisnotsuitableforthatparticularjournal.
Byfindingthejournalsthatarethemostlikelyandmostdesirable“homes”forthesubmittedpapersthewriterscanavoidwastingtimeandeffort.Insteadofsendingpaperstoawrongjournal,wherethesubmissionmightgetrejected,thewritershouldstartwritinghispaperwithanappropriatejournalinmind.Thus,thesubmittedpaperwillhaveamuchchanceofacceptanceforpublication.
