JodyWilliamswasborninVermontin1950.Likemanyteenagersofhergeneration,shebecamedevotedtotheideaofpeacewhilebeingagainstthewarinVietnamwhenyoung.

InOctober1992,theInternationalCampaigntoBanLandmines(ICBL)wasformallysetup.TheICBLcalledforanendtotheuse,production,andtradeoflandmines.Asthecampaign’sleader,Williamswroteandspokewidelyonthelandmineproblemandtheneedforatotalban.

TogetherwithShawnRoberts,shewroteabookthatdescribedthehiddencostsoflandmineuse,suchasthelongtermeffectsoflandmines.Thelandminesmeanthatpeoplecannottravelorworksafely.Landgoesunused,causingunemploymentandpoverty(贫穷).Thereisalsothehugecostoftreatinglandminevictims(受害者).

Theireffortswererewardedin1996,whenameetinghostedbytheCanadiangovernmentagreedtowriteoutaninternationaltreaty(条约)banninglandmines.InDecember1997,thetreatywassigned,withthesupportof122countries.Infiveyears,JodyWilliamsandtheICBLhaveachievedtheirgoalofintroducingalandmineban.TheNorwegianNobelPrizeCommitteeawardedWilliamsandtheICBLtheNobelPeacePrizeinthesameyear.
