  thelongcorridoractuallyisalongcoveredwalkway.itstartsfromthegateofthegreetingthemoonintheeastandendsthemarbleboatinthewest.itis728meterslongwith273sections,soitiscalledlongcorridor.thelongcorridorliesinfrontofthelongevityhillwiththegateofdispellingcloudsinthecenter.itwasfirstbuiltin1750byemperorqianlongforhismothertoenjoytherainysceneryonkunminglakeandtokeepoffthesunshineinsummer.therearetotally14,000picturespaintedonthebeamsandcrossbeamsofthelongcorridor.thesecolorfulpaintingscanbedividedinto4kinds:

landscapesandscenicspots,beautifulflowersandbirds,chinesearchitectureandhumanfigures.thebeautifulflowersandbirdsandlandscapeswerecopiedfromthesceneryofwestlake.in1990,thelongcorridorwaslistedintheguinnessworldrecordsasthelongestpaintedcorridorintheworld.likemostofthesummerpalace,thelongcorridorwasseverelydamagedbyfirewhichanglo---frenchalliedforceslaidin1860duringthesecondopiumwar.itwasrebuiltin1886.asapartofthesummerpalace,thelongcorridorwasincludedontheunescoworldheritagelistindecember,1998.therearefouroctagonalpavilionswithdoubleeaves,twooneachsideofthecloud---dispellinggate.thepavilionssymbolizethefourseasons(spring,summer,autumn,winter)andarenamed(fromeasttowest):

liujia(留佳“retainingthegoodness”),jinlan(寄澜;“livingwiththeripples”),qiushui(秋水“autumnwater”),andqingyao(清遥“clearandfar”)。

  thenameofthehallofdispellingcloundsderiversfromaversebythepoetguopu(276-324)inthejindynasty“insuchasplendidhall,supernaturalbeingswillemerge.”itissituatedonthecentralaxisoflongevityhillandistheheartofasuccessionofbuildingsusedforcelebrations.builtonthesiteofdaxionghall(hillofsakyamuniormainshrinehall),itwastheplacetocelebrateempressdowagercixi’sbirthday.onherbirthday,october10ofthechineselunaryear,withemperorguangxuleadingthetroops,allrankskowtowedtoherasshesatonthe“nine-dragonthrone”toreceivegreetingsandraregifts.withredpillarsandyellowtiles,thepaiyundiancontains21rooms.althoughthetreasuresondisplayinsidearefewerthanthoseinthehallofbenevolenceandlongevity,someofthearemorevaluable.

  althoughthisisthemostmagnificentarchitecturalcomplexofthesummerpalace,cixiusedthehallonlyonceayearonherbirthday.

  towerofbuddhistincense(佛香阁)

  asthesymbolicstructure,thetowerofbuddhistincensetopsthehighgrandtowersofboththesummerpalaceandthe“threemountainsandfivegardens”(longevityhill,jadespringmountain,andfragranthill;gardenofclearripples,gardenofeverlastingspring,gardenofperfectionandbrightness,gardenoftranquilityandbrightness,andgardenoftranquilityandpleasure)。

setuponthe21-meter-high()basestepsofthefrontslopeoflongevityhillandtoweringtoahighof41meters(feet),itcanbeseenfromthroughoutthearea.facingkunminglakesouthward,backingonthehalloftheseaofwisdom,itwasflankedbysymmetricalbuilding.witheightporticos,threelevelsandfourlayeredeaves,thefrontpartimitatestheyellowcranetowerinhubeiprovince.itistheelitetoweramongtreasuredancientstructures.

  anine-levelpagodaatthetower’slocationwasplannedwhichemperorqianlong(1711-1799)orderedtobedismantledduringtheconstructionoftheeighthlevel.aftertheunfinishedpagoda,therestoodthetowerofbuddhistincenseinsteadin1758.unfortunately,itwasruinedbyanglo-frenchforcesin1860;thenrebuiltduring1891-1894,atacostof780,000taelsofsilver.insideisagildedstatueofthethousand-handedkwan-yin.setoffbyeight,itglowswithsacredbeauty.onthefirstdayandfifteenthdayofthelunarmonth,theempressdowagercixiwouldgotheretoprayandburnjosssticks.in1989,thetowerofbuddhistincensewasopenedtothepublic.itisnowundergoingreconstruction,thelargestsuchprojectinmodernchina,costing50,000,000yuanwithaplannedcompletiondatein2006.

  standingonthethirdstory,visitorscanseeforestsaswellaskunminglakereflectingthepicturesquelandscapes.

  halloftheseaofwisdom(智慧海)

  grandbuddhastablysittinginthehalloftheseaofwisdom,summerpalace,beijingbuiltonthepinnacleoflongevityhill,thehalloftheseaofwisdomisdesignedtostandattheupperendofanaxisstretchingfromthekunminglaketothesummit.wheninitiallybuiltduringmadeentirelyofcoloredglazebricks,withoutanytimberbeams,andwasalsoknownas“nobeamhall”。

owingtoitstimber-freeframe,itsurvivedthefiresetbytheanglo-frenchalliedforcein1860.however,theholystatueofamitayusbuddha,aswellas1008smallerengravedbuddhassurroundingit,wasdestroyed.

  itisaholybuilding,withitsname,“theseaofwisdom”whichcomesfromthesutra,symbolizingthemightyforceandtheinfinitewisdomoftathagadabuddha.avisitorwhoconnectsthethreecharactersonthearchitravesofthehallandtheglazedmemorialarchwaywillfindthatformthebuddhist’schant.

  purplecloudgatetower(紫气东来)

  thistwo-storytowerstructure,ontheeastslopeofthelongevityhill,wasbuiltduringemperorqianlong’sreign(1736-1795)。

theinscriptionsonbothsidesofthetowerwerewrittenbyemperorqianlong.

  theinscriptiononthenorthgate-tower“chichengxiaqi”means“therosycloudsrisinginchichengmountain.”chichengisthenameofaplaceinzhejiangprovince.thisphrasedescribethegate-towershiningfromthemorningsunshine.

  thefourchinesecharactersonthesouthgate-tower,“ziqidonglai”means“thepurplecloudscomefromtheeast.”thisphasecomesfromastoryaboutanancientchinesephilosophernamedlaozi,whowastryingtogetthroughamajormilitarypassnamedhangupass.itwassaidthatlingyin,amilitaryofficialinthispass,sawawispofpurplecloudscominggentlyfromtheeast.heknewthatthisgoodomenmeantthatasaintwascoming.thanhetookabathandputonhisnewclothes,gettingeverythingreadytowelcomethesaint.thenextdayhereallysawlaoziridingslowlytothepassonablackox.later,afamouspostdufuofthetangdynastywrotethisstoryinhispoem.

  thehallforlisteningtoorioles(听鹂馆)

  thehallforlisteningtoorioleusedtobeatwo-storystagebuiltbyemperorqianlongforhismotheremperordowagerniugulushitoenjoypekingoperaandperformances.thestagewaslaterusedbyempressdowagercixi.

  orioleisakindofbird,andithasverysweetvoiceandpleasingsound;ergo,thestageisnamed“hallforlisteningtooriole.”afterthegardenofvirtuousharmonywascomplete,thehallbecamearesidenceforimperialconcubines.nowitisaverynicerestaurantforbothchineseandforeigntourists.

  thesummerpalaceislocatedonthenorthwestoutskirtsofbeijing.itisthebest-preservedandlargestimperialgardenexistinginchina.thesummerpalaceisformedmainlywithlongevityhillandkunminglake.thelakeoccupiesthreequartersofthewholearea.itcoversanareaofover290hectares.

  thesummerpalacewasfirstbuiltasanimperialgardenandpalaceatthebeginningof12thcenturyinthejindynasty,theconstructioncontinuedtotheyuanandmingdynastiesandthepalacewasenlargedintheqingdynasty,thus,altogetherlastingformorethan800years.inthejindynasty,thegoldenhillhallwasbuilthere.intheyuandynasty,thenameofthehillwaschangedtojarhillbecauseitwassaidthatanoldmanhaddugupajarhere.inthemingdynasty,emperorzhengdebuiltthewonderfulimperialgardenbythelake.intheqingdynastyduringthereignofemperorqianlong,large-scaleconstructionofimperialgardensreacheditsculmination.thewholeprojectwasnamedthethreehillsandfivegardenofclearripples.in1860theanglo-frenchalliedforcesinvadedbeijingandthethreehillsandfivegardenswereburntdowntoashes.in1888empressdowagercixidivertedthefundsfornavytorestorethegardenofclearripplesandrenameditasthesummerpalace.in1900thealliedforcesofeightpowersinvadedbeijingandoccupiedthesummerpalaceformorethanayear.thesummerpalacewasplunderedbytheinvaders.theytookawayeverythingvaluableanddestroyedthebuildings.uponempressdowagercixi’sreturntobeijing,sheorderedthegardentoberebuiltimmediately.whenreconstructiontobeijing,sheorderedthegardentoberebuiltimmediately.whenreconstructionwascompleted,empressdowagercixicametoliveinthisimperialgardenfromapriltooctobereveryyearfortherestofherlife.in1924thesummerpalacewasturnedintoapublicpark.

  theeastpalacegateisthemainentrancetothesummerpalace.thecentralgatecalledtheimperialgatewaywasfortheemperorandtheempress.thegatesoneithersidewereforprincesandhigh-rankingofficials.theplaqueabovethemiddlegatebearsthreebigchinesecharacters“thesummerpalace”inemperorguangxu’shandwriting.
