1.SecurityProblemsintheUSA
Lawsaredesignedtoprotectusandensureoursafetyinallaspectsofourlives:
physical,financial,psychologicalandsocial.Yetnotadaydoesgobythatwedon’thearofcrimestakingplaceinourcityorstate.Whenacrimeiscommitted,publicsafetybecomesendangeredandspecificindividualsorgroupsmayfeelviolated.Whilewewouldliketoavoidsuchevents,theytakeplacealltoooften.Herearesomestatisticsthatdemonstratethis:
∙Everytwominutes,somewhereinAmerica,someoneissexuallyassaulted(强奸,性侵犯).
∙In2002,therewereatotalof4,854casesofaggravatedassaultinWashingtonDC.Onadailybasis,thiscomputesto13.2aggravatedassaultsaday.
∙InMaryland,therewere3,228casesoflarceny(偷盗;盗窃)andtheftsper100,000peoplein2002.Thisisone-thirdhigherthanthenationalaveragerateof2,445.8casesper100,000.
∙InDetroit,therewere41.79murdersper100,000peoplein2002.Thisisalarminglywayabovethenationalaveragerateof5.6forthesameyear.
∙In2002,withtheexceptionofburglaries(夜盗),Philadelphialedallcrimelevelswhichwereabovethenationalaverageratesformurder,forciblerape,robbery,aggravatedassaults(严重人身伤害罪),larceny/theftandmotorvehicletheft(机动车盗窃).

∙Corporatecrimehasrecentlyjolted(震动)thecorporateworld(企业界)withthelikesoftheEnronscandal(安然丑闻)美国安然公司曾经是一家非常成功的能源企业,然而前不久该公司通过假账掩盖巨额债务并虚报盈余的丑闻暴露了,现在已经破产。

2001年9月11日,19名恐怖分子劫持了美国4架民航客机,并对美国的几个标志性建筑发动恐怖袭击,制造了震惊世界的“9·11”事件。
在纽约,当地时间上午8时46分(北京时间晚8时46分),恐怖分子劫持美洲航空公司第11次航班波音767客机撞击高110层的世界贸易中心大楼北楼。
这架飞机是从波士顿飞往洛杉矶的,机上有81名乘客和11名机组人员。
9时03分,被劫持的美洲航空公司第77次航班波音757客机撞向纽约世贸中心大楼南楼。
该机从华盛顿飞往洛杉矶,机上有58名乘客和6名机组人员。
随后,世贸中心两座大楼相继坍塌。
双塔楼中1号楼10时28分倒塌,2号楼9时50分倒塌。
事件中共有343位消防队员牺牲。
在华盛顿,当地时间上午9时45分左右,美国联合航空公司的第175次航班客机从华盛顿杜勒斯机场起飞后不久被劫持并撞在五角大楼西南端。
五角大楼的一角塌陷。
机上有乘客和机组人员共65人。
此后,美国总统府白宫附近发生大火,国务院大楼、国会山附近相继发生炸弹爆炸事件。
恐怖袭击发生后,美国副总统切尼、第一夫人劳拉和国会要人旋即转移到安全地点,政府各部门、各大公司等机构的工作人员也都从办公地点紧急疏散。
在宾夕法尼亚州,当地时间上午10时,从新泽西州纽瓦克飞往旧金山的联合航空公司的第93次航班客机在距匹兹堡东南130公里处坠毁。
机上有乘客及机组成员共45人。
“9·11”这一系列恐怖袭击事件造成近3000人死亡,死者多为平民。
