Abstract:

JohnDonneisarepresentativepoetoftheMetaphysicalSchoolandbecomeswell-knownintheliteraryarenaforhissubtleuseofconceits.Theimageryisareflectionofthepracticalworldandvoiceofpoet’semotion.ThispaperexaminesDonne’suniqueapproachtoloveinimagery,concentratingonhowheadoptsimagesinhisSongsandSonnetsfortheillustrationofhisloveideas.Theessayanalyzestheimageryofhislovepoemsandthencomparesthemwiththeotherpoemstopresenthispeculiarconceits,charmofartandintroducehowtheintellectualsideoflovecanberelatedtoitsphysicalside.Accordingly,itprovidesanewperspectivetoappreciatelovepoetry.Inthecourseofanalyzingthem,thisessayaimsatteachingpeoplehowtoapprehendthecontentofpoetry,poet’skeenfeelingsandthepurport,improvingtheabilityofappreciatingthemotifandadvocatingthespiritofpoems’innovationandbeingboldinimagination.

摘要:

英国诗人约翰·邓恩是玄学派的代表人物,他因在诗歌中精妙地运用奇喻的比喻手法而蜚声文坛。

而意象,作为真实世界的写照也反映了诗人丰富的内心世界。

本文即从邓恩在运用意象方面考察他独特的爱情表达方式,研究他如何在《歌与短歌》中选取意象来传达他的爱情观。

该文先后分析邓恩爱情诗中独特意象并与其他诗歌进行强烈对比,展示了其诗歌奇喻的妙用及艺术魅力并揭示其爱情观,为读者欣赏诗歌提供了一个全新的角度,促使人们深入地理解诗歌内容、诗人情感以及诗歌主旨。

由此提升读者的诗歌鉴赏能力,诗歌创新意识,勇于发挥大胆想象力。

1.1ABriefReviewofJohnDonne’sLife

JohnDonne(21January1572–31March1631)wasanEnglishpoet,satirist,lawyer,andpriestwhoisconsideredaprominentrepresentativeofthemetaphysicalpoetsoftheperiod.Hisworksarenotablefortheirrealisticandsensualstyleandincludesonnets,lovepoetry,religiouspoems,Latintranslations,epigrams,elegies,songs,satiresandsermons.Donneisfamousforhisfrankness,penetratingrealismandcynicism.Heemphasizeshisthoughtbyfantasticmetaphorsandextravaganthyperboles.JohnDonne’smasterpieceisSongsandSonnets,amongwhichTheSunRisingandTheFleaarethetwomostfamouspoems.

Despitehisgreateducationandpoetictalents,helivedinpovertyforseveralyears,relyingheavilyonwealthyfriends.Hespentmuchofthemoneyheinheritedduringandafterhiseducationonwomanizing,literature,pastimesandtravel.In1601DonnesecretlymarriedAnneMoorewithwhomhehad12children.In1615hebecameanAnglicanpriestalthoughhedidnotwanttotakeAnglicanorders.HedidsobecauseKingJamesIpersistentlyorderedit.In1621,hewasappointedtheDeanofStPaul'sCathedralinLondon.Healsoservedasamemberofparliamentin1601andagainin1614.

OnhisreturnDonnebecameprivatesecretarytoSirThomasEgerton,LordKeeperoftheGreatSeal.HischancesofcareeradvancementweredestroyedwhenhesecretlymarriedAnneMore,daughterofSirGeorgeMore.Anne'senragedfatherhadDonnethrownintoFleetPrisonforseveralweeks,andEgertondismissedhimfromhispost.

Donne'smarriagewasahappyone,despiteconstantfinancialworries.Withtypicalwrywit,DonnedescribedhislifewithAnneas"JohnDonne,AnneDonne,andUndone".Finally,in1609,GeorgeMorewasinducedtorelentandpayhisdaughter'sdowry.InthemeantimeDonneworkedasalawyer,andproducedDivinePoems(1607).

Donne'sfinalbreakwithhisCatholicpastcamewiththepublicationofPseudo-Martyr(1610)andIgnatiushisConclave.TheseworkswonhimthefavorofKingJames,whopressuredhimtotakeAnglicanorders.Donnereluctantlyagreed,andin1615hewasappointedRoyalChaplain,andthefollowingyearhegainedthepostofReaderinDivinityatLincoln'sInn.TherehisfiercewitandlearningmadeDonneoneofthepopularpreachersofhisday.

Thenin1617AnneDonnediedingivingbirthtothecouple's12thchild.HerdeathaffectedDonnegreatly,thoughhecontinuedtowrite,notablyHolySonnets(1618).

In1621DonnewasappointedDeanofSt.Paul's,apostheheldfortheremainderofhislife.InhisfinalyearsDonne'spoemsreflectanobsessionwithhisowndeath,whichcameonMarch31,1631.

1.2ASimpleAnalysisofJohnDonne’sPoems

Donnewrotepoetryallhislife.Inhis20sand30s,hewrotesomeofhisfamouslyricpoems,includingthecollectionsSatiresandSongsandSonnets.HisfirstAnniversarydidnotappearuntilhewas39.VerylittleofDonne'sworkappearedinprintduringhislifetimeandmostofhisotherpoetrywasnotpublisheduntilafterhisdeath.Hispoemswerewidelyreadandadmiredamongaristocraticandliterarycircle.Thoughhisstylehasthesameorganicdevelopment,Donne'sverseisdividedintothelovepoetryofhisyouthandthereligiouspoetryofhisolderyears.Thelovepoetryisenergetic,passionatewithintellectualrhetoric.Physicallyurgentanderotic,Donnewasthefirstwritertouse'sex'initspresentsense.Ontheotherhand,asadevotionalpoet,hisverseislessarrestingintermsofstyleandlesssureofdirection.Thishasbeeninterpretedasaspiritualstruggle,thatinordertoachievefaith,onehastoconquerdoubt.Donneisconsideredamasterofthemetaphysicalconceit,anextendedmetaphorthatcombinestwovastlydifferentideasintoasingleidea,oftenusingimagery.Anexampleofthisishisequationofloverswithsaintsin"TheCanonization."UnliketheconceitsfoundinotherElizabethanpoetry,mostnotablyPetrarchanconceits,whichformedclichédcomparisonsbetweenmorecloselyrelatedobjects(suchasaroseandlove),metaphysicalconceitsgotoagreaterdepthincomparingtwocompletelyunlikeobjects,althoughsometimesinthemodeofShakespeare'sradicalparadoxesandimplodedcontraries.OneofthemostfamousofDonne'sconceitsisfoundin"AValediction:

ForbiddingMourning"wherehecomparestwoloverswhoareseparatedtothetwolegsofacompass.

Donne'sworksarealsowitty,employingparadoxes,puns,andsubtleyetremarkableanalogies.Hispiecesareoftenironicandcynical,especiallyregardingloveandhumanmotives.CommonsubjectsofDonne'spoemsarelove(especiallyinhisearlylife),death(especiallyafterhiswife'sdeath),andreligion.Hispoetryisnotedforitsvibrancyoflanguageandinventivenessofmetaphor,especiallyascomparedtothatofhiscontemporaries.JohnDonne'sstyleischaracterizedbyabruptopenings,variousparadoxes,ironies,dislocations.Thesefeaturesincombinationwithhisfrequentdramaticoreverydayspeechrhythms,histensesyntax,andhistougheloquencewerebothareactionagainstthesmoothnessofconventionalElizabethanpoetryandanadaptationintoEnglishofEuropeanbaroqueandmanneristtechniques.HisearlycareerwasmarkedbypoetrythatboreimmenseknowledgeofBritishsocietyandhemetthatknowledgewithsharpcriticism.AnotherimportantthemeinDonne’spoetrywastheideaoftruereligion,whichwassomethingthathespentalotoftimeconsideringandtheorizingabout.Hewrotesecularpoemsaswellaseroticpoemsandlovepoems.Donneisparticularlyfamousforhismasteryofmetaphysicalconceits.

JohnDonne'spoetryrepresentedashiftfromclassicalformstomorepersonalpoetry.Donneisnotedforhispoeticmeter,whichwasstructuredwithchangingandjaggedrhythmsthatcloselyresemblecasualspeech(itwasforthisthatthemoreclassically-mindedBenJonsoncommentedthat"Donne,fornotkeepingofaccent,deservedhanging").

SomescholarsbelievethatDonne'sliteraryworksreflectthechangingtrendsofhislife,withlovepoetryandsatiresfromhisyouthandreligioussermonsduringhislateryears.
