Introduction1.1 A Brief Review of John Donnes LifeJohn Donne (21 January 1572 31 March 1631) was an English poet, satiri

12、st, lawyer, and priest who is considered a prominent representative of the metaphysical poets of the period. His works are notable for their realistic and sensual style and include sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires and sermons. Donne is famo

13、us for his frankness, penetrating realism and cynicism. He emphasizes his thought by fantastic metaphors and extravagant hyperboles. John Donnes masterpiece is Songs and Sonnets, among which The Sun Rising and The Flea are the two most famous poems.Despite his great education and poetic talents, he

14、lived in poverty for several years, relying heavily on wealthy friends. He spent much of the money he inherited during and after his education on womanizing, literature, pastimes and travel. In 1601 Donne secretly married Anne Moore with whom he had 12 children. In 1615 he became an Anglican priest

15、although he did not want to take Anglican orders. He did so because King James I persistently ordered it. In 1621, he was appointed the Dean of St Pauls Cathedral in London. He also served as a member of parliament in 1601 and again in 1614. On his return Donne became private secretary to Sir Thomas

16、 Egerton, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal. His chances of career advancement were destroyed when he secretly married Anne More, daughter of Sir George More. Annes enraged father had Donne thrown into Fleet Prison for several weeks, and Egerton dismissed him from his post.Donnes marriage was a happy on

17、e, despite constant financial worries. With typical wry wit, Donne described his life with Anne as John Donne, Anne Donne, and Undone. Finally, in 1609, George More was induced to relent and pay his daughters dowry. In the meantime Donne worked as a lawyer, and produced Divine Poems (1607).Donnes fi

18、nal break with his Catholic past came with the publication of Pseudo-Martyr (1610) and Ignatius his Conclave. These works won him the favor of King James, who pressured him to take Anglican orders. Donne reluctantly agreed, and in 1615 he was appointed Royal Chaplain, and the following year he gaine

19、d the post of Reader in Divinity at Lincolns Inn. There his fierce wit and learning made Donne one of the popular preachers of his day.Then in 1617 Anne Donne died in giving birth to the couples 12th child. Her death affected Donne greatly, though he continued to write, notably Holy Sonnets (1618).

20、In 1621 Donne was appointed Dean of St. Pauls, a post he held for the remainder of his life. In his final years Donnes poems reflect an obsession with his own death, which came on March 31, 1631.1.2 A Simple Analysis of John Donnes PoemsDonne wrote poetry all his life. In his 20s and 30s, he wrote s

21、ome of his famous lyric poems, including the collections Satires and Songs and Sonnets. His first Anniversary did not appear until he was 39. Very little of Donnes work appeared in print during his lifetime and most of his other poetry was not published until after his death. His poems were widely r

22、ead and admired among aristocratic and literary circle. Though his style has the same organic development, Donnes verse is divided into the love poetry of his youth and the religious poetry of his older years. The love poetry is energetic, passionate with intellectual rhetoric. Physically urgent and

23、 erotic, Donne was the first writer to use sex in its present sense. On the other hand, as a devotional poet, his verse is less arresting in terms of style and less sure of direction. This has been interpreted as a spiritual struggle, that in order to achieve faith, one has to conquer doubt. Donne i

24、s considered a master of the metaphysical conceit, an extended metaphor that combines two vastly different ideas into a single idea, often using imagery. An example of this is his equation of lovers with saints in The Canonization. Unlike the conceits found in other Elizabethan poetry, most notably

25、Petrarchan conceits, which formed clichd comparisons between more closely related objects (such as a rose and love), metaphysical conceits go to a greater depth in comparing two completely unlike objects, although sometimes in the mode of Shakespeares radical paradoxes and imploded contraries. 26、f the most famous of Donnes conceits is found in A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning where he compares two lovers who are separated to the two legs of a compass.Donnes works are also witty, employing paradoxes, puns, and subtle yet remarkable analogies. His pieces are often ironic and cynical, especi

27、ally regarding love and human motives. Common subjects of Donnes poems are love (especially in his early life), death (especially after his wifes death), and religion. His poetry is noted for its vibrancy of language and inventiveness of metaphor, especially as compared to that of his contemporaries

28、. John Donnes style is characterized by abrupt openings, various paradoxes, ironies, dislocations. These features in combination with his frequent dramatic or everyday speech rhythms, his tense syntax, and his tough eloquence were both a reaction against the smoothness of conventional Elizabethan po

29、etry and an adaptation into English of European baroque and mannerist techniques. His early career was marked by poetry that bore immense knowledge of British society and he met that knowledge with sharp criticism.
