AlmostallsentenceheadlinesintheBangkokPostusethepresenttense—despitethefactthattheygenerallydescribepastevents.Thepresenttensegivesthesubjectasenseoffreshnessandimmediacy,makingitmoreinterestingtoread.

Headlinespackagreatdealofinformationintoalimitedspace,soitisnotsurprisingthatBangkokPostheadlinewritersuseseveralmethodstoconservespace.Oneobviousexampleistouseabbreviations(“PM”for“PrimeMinister”,etc.).Buttheyalsouseaspecialgrammar,omittingarticles(“a”and“the”)andtheverb“tobe”whereverpossible.
