AccordingtoGeraldCrabtree,ascientistatStanfordUniversityintheUS,weare.

Youmaynotwanttohearthis,butCrabtreebelievesthathumanintelligencereacheditspeakmorethan2,000yearsagoandeversincethenhasbeengoingdownhill.“IfanaverageGreekfrom1,000BCweretransportedtomoderntimes,heorshewouldbeoneofthebrightestamongus,”CrabtreetoldTheGuardian.

AttheheartofCrabtree’sthinkingisasimpleidea.Inthepast,intelligencewascriticalforsurvivalwhenourancestorshadtoavoiddangerousanimalsandhuntforfood.Thedifferenceofbeingsmartorstupidisoftenlifeordeath.However,afterthespreadofagriculture,whenourancestorsbegantoliveincrowdedfarmingcommunities,theneedtokeeptheirintelligenceinpeakconditiongraduallyreduced.

Thisisnothardtounderstand.Mostofthetime,pressureiswhatkeepsusgoing–youneedthepressurefromyourteacherstofinishyourhomework;thepressureoflookingprettymakesyouloseweightwhensummercomes.Andthesameisalsotrueofourintelligence–ifwethinkless,webecomelesssmart.
