FacingtheFuture
Formanyofus,it'ssomethingwealreadyhaveexperienced.Onemoment,wearelyingcomfortablyinbed,abouttofallintoadeepsleep.Thenext,oureyesareopenandwefindourselveswonderingorevenworryingaboutpossiblythemostimportantissueofourlives-thefuture.Willwegetintotheschoolofourchoice?
Whatwillwebedoingintenyears'time?
CanwebecomethepersonwereallywanttobeInthefaceofsuchquestions,howshouldweapproachthefuture?
Canwetakeactiontoshapeit,orshouldwejustacceptwhatevercomesourway?
Asmanyofusalreadyknow,havingplansinplaceforthefutureisnoguaranteethattheywillbecomereality.Inthisrespect,somepeoplearemorefortunatethanothers,ascanbeillustratedbycomparingthelivesoftwofamousauthors,born40yearsapart.Althoughtheysharedthesameambitiousandenergeticapproachtolife,theircareersunfoldedincontrastingways.
TheAmericanauthor,ErnestHemingway,bornin1899,wasfromearlyboyhoodsingle-mindedinhisambitiontowrite.Onleavinghighschool,hejoinedalocalKansasnewspaperasatraineereporter.HewentontobecomeforeigncorrespondentfortheTorontoStarandusedhisextraordinaryexperiencesinEuropeandlaterCubatoinformhiswritingInhiswords,"IdecidedthatIwouldwriteonestoryabouteachthingthatIknewabout."Havingsethimselfthisgoal,hewrotenovelsandshortstoriesbasedonhispersonalexperiencesoftheFirstWorldWar,theSpanishCivilWar,bullfightinganddeep-seafishing,amongstothers.HisshortnovelTheOldManandtheSea,aboutthethree-dayepicstrugglebetweenanelderlyfishermanandthebiggestfishhehadevercaught,wonthePulitzerPrizeforFictionin1953.HewouldlatergoontowintheNobelPrizeinLiterature.
Bycontrast,theyoungAuthurConanDoyle,borninScotlandin1859,hadoriginallyworkedasdoctor.ButDoyle's'mainambitionwastobecomeawriterofhistoricalnovels.Althoughsomeofhishistoricalnovelswerepublished,theirsuccesswasnothingcomparedtothestoriesofhisfictionaldetective,SherlockHolmes,whichheisstillbestknownfortothisday.
Interestingly,DoylewrotesomeofhisearlyHolmesstorieswhilehewaswaitingforpatientsinhismedicalpracticeinLondon.AfterSherlockHolmesmadehimahouseholdname,Doylegaveupmedicineanddevotedhimselfentirelytowriting.Hestilllongedtobecomeknownforhishistoricalnovelsamongstotheracademicworks.Thepublic,however,couldn'tgetenoughofSherlockHolmes.Indesperation,Doylekilledoffthefamousdetectiveinanovelpublishedin1893sothathecouldfocusonhis"serious"writing.However,fansofHolmesweresoangrythatDoyle,underimmensepressure,wasforcedtobringHolmesbackfromthedead.Doyle'smanyhistoricalnovels,plays,poemsandacademicpapershaveremainedlargelyforgotten,butSherlockHolmeshasbeenentertainingreadersforwelloveracentury.
Thoughbothofthesemenwereultimatelysuccessful,theirpathstosuccesswereverydifferent,theirfuturesnotnecessarilyturningoutexactlyastheyplanned.So,whatevertwistsandturnsyoumightencounter,takealeafoutofthebooksofthesetwoauthorsandbepreparedfortheunexpected.AsrenownedtechinnovatorSteveJobsoncesaid,"Youcan'tconnectthedotslookingforward;youcanonlyconnectthemlookingbackwards.Soyouhavetotrustthatthedotswillsomehowconnectinyourfuture.
