1.SaltLakeCityisthestatecapitalandmostpopulouscityintheUSstateofUtah.
ThecityoccupiesthenorthendoftheSaltLakeValleyatanelevationof4,327feet(1,320m).Thevalleyissurroundedbymountainsthatriseupto6,500feet(1,980m)abovethevalleyfloor.NamedafterthenearbyGreatSaltLak—einfact,theoriginalnamewas“GreaStaltLakeCity”—thecityiseparatedfromthelake'sshoreby
marshesandmudflats.Resiedntsareknownas“SaltLakers”.Foundedin1847byagroupofLatter-daySaints(Mormons)ledbyBrighamYoung,SaltLakeCityis
amongtheregion'soldestcitiesandisthelocationoftheheadquartersofTheChurchofJesusChristofLatter-daySaints.Miningandrailroadsinitiallybroughteconomicgrowth,andthecitybecameknownasthe“CrossroadsoftheWest”.The
cityhasdevelopedastrongtourismindustryandwashosttothe2002WinterOlympics.
2.CarlLewis,thegreatestandmostfamousathleteofthelastcentury,won9Olympicgoldmedalsinfourdifferentevents(100m,200m,longjumpand4x100mrelay).CarlLewiswasbornon1stJuly1961inBirmingham,Alabama.Sincehisfirstyearsoflifehecouldbreathethesoftandcleanairofsport:

Butforthemoment,Carlwassothinthatthedoctorsuggestedmakinghimdosports.Hiseducation,beyondstudies,embracedalotoffields.Helearnedtoplaymusicalinstruments,todance,tosingandappliedhimselftoalargevarietyofsports:
football,soccer,divingand,obviously,trackandfield.
Amazingly,hisfatherwasafriendofJesseOwensandsoCarlgrewupunderthelegendofthisman,whowonfourgoldmedalsintheOlympicGamesofBerlinin1936.Carlbeganwithlongjumpandafteracompetition,attheageof10,hewasawardedbyOwenshimself.Attheageof13hejumped5.51mandwhenhewas17,7.85m.Trainerspointedhimoutasayoungpromise.Infact,in1979hewasallowedtojointhenationalteamandtotakepartinthePan-AmericangamesinSanJuan,PuertoRico.Heplacedthirdwith8.13monhislastjump.Meanwhile,hespentpartofhistimetrainingforthe100mandin1979heranthisin10.67seconds.
3.BenJohnsonwasborninFalmouth,Jamaicaon30December,1961.HeemigratedtoCanadain1976.Benmadehisdebutatamajorinternationaltournamentinthe100matthe1983WorldChampionships,wherehewaseliminatedinthesemi-finals.Thefollowingyear,BenJohnsonreachedthefinalofthe100matthe1984SummerOlympicsinLosAngeles,finishingthirdbehindCarlLewis.WiththeCanadian4lOOrtKrelayteam,hewonasecondbronzemedal.Atthe1987WorldChampionships,inRome,JohnsongainedinstantworldfamewhenhebeatLewisforthetitle,settinganewworldrecordof9.83secondsaswell.JohnsonandLewiswerealsothefavoritesforthe1988Olympictitle.Inthefinal,JohnsonbeatLewis,clockinganewworldrecordof9.79seconds.Afewdayslater,however,Johnson'surinesampleswerefoundtocontainsteroids,andhewasdisqualifiedfordoping.
