Holden,thechiefcharacterofTheCatcherintheRye,tellsusthathewantstoliveontheedgeofthewoods;SalingerrealizedthisdreambyretreatingtoasmallfarmtowninNewHampshire,wherethetownspeopleseemasdevotedtohisprivacyasheishimself.There,inCornish,SalingerhasbeenabletoescapethedistractionsoftheliteraryworldandtoavoidpeoplewhohavesoughttocapitalizeonhisinstantfamefollowingthepublicationofTheCatcherintheRyein1951.

LittleisknownaboutSalinger'slifesincehemovedtoCornish.LocalresidentsenjoyprotectingSalinger'sanonymity,andinterviewswiththemtypicallyhaveproducedbland,noncommittalresponsesthatmakeSalingersoundaboutasinterestingaslastmonth'snewspaper.Salingerhimselfrefusestobeinterviewed.

ThefactsofSalinger'searlierlife,however,areontherecord.JeromeDavidSalingerwasborninNewYorkCityin1919,thesonofaprosperousimporterofmeatandcheese.Hewasamediocrestudentinthepublicschoolheattended,andafterheflunkedoutoftheprivateMcBurneySchool,hisparentssenthimtoValleyForgeMilitaryAcademyinPennsylvania.

HelaterspentlessthanamonthatNewYorkUniversityandthen

tookashort-storycourseatColumbiaUniversity.Hisfirststorywaspublishedin1940.From1942to1946hewasintheArmy,continuingtowrite"wheneverIcanfindtimeandanunoccupiedfoxhole."HereturnedtoNewYorkin1946,andinthenextfewyearshadstoriespublishedinvariousperiodicals,notablyTheNewYorker.

In1953SalingermetClaireDouglas,aBritish-bornRadcliffestudent.Sheapparentlybecamethemodelformorethanoneofhischaracters.Theyweremarriedtwoyearslater,andtheyhavetwochildren,MargaretAnn,bornin1955,andMatthew,bornin1960.Theyweredivorcedin1967.

Salinger'slaterpublishedworkshaveallbeenstories.MostofthemdealwiththechildrenoftheGlassfamily,who,likeSalinger,haveaJewishfatherandaChristianmother.ThesestorieshavebeencollectedinNineStories(1953);FrannyandZooey(1961);andRaiseHightheRoofBeam,CarpentersandSeymour:

AnIntroduction(1963).Allthreebooksreceivedconsiderablecriticalpraiseandwereverypopular.

Salinger'spublishedliteraryoutputdeclinedovertheyears.Bytheearly1980s,hehadnotpublishedaworkinsometwentyyears.Still,heisconsideredoneofthemostvitalwritersofthecentury.HisreputationrestslargelyonTheCatcherintheRye.-

InChapter12ofTheCatcherintheRye,HoldenCaulfieldisatabarlisteningtoajazzpianoplayerwhoseworkheenjoys.Theapplausefromtheaudience,andthemusician'sacceptanceofit,leadHoldentosay:

"IsweartoGod,ifIwereapianoplayeroranactororsomethingandallthosedopesthoughtIwasterrific,I'dhateit.Iwouldn'tevenwantthemtoclapforme....I'dplayitinthegoddamcloset."
